The Maharashtra government has decided to modify the Thane-Borivali tunnel project by extending its departure point to relieve traffic congestion, officials said on Wednesday.
Several inhabitants of Mulla Baug housing societies in the Manpada region have raised concerns about safety, planning, and environmental regulations.
The 11.8-kilometre tunnel, projected to cost Rs 16,600 crore, will shorten the distance between Borivali, on Mumbai's northern coast, and Thane by 12 kilometres, resulting in a much shorter travel time compared to the current more than two-hour journey.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lay the project's foundation stone on July 13, last year.
"It has been decided to extend the tunnel to be built between Thane-Borivali to Satyashankar wall instead of Mulla Baug. The decision will provide relief to local residents from traffic congestion," a release from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's office said referring to a discussion held over the issue on Tuesday.

To lessen the annoyance caused by dust and noise pollution, the excavated material would be moved on a closed conveyor belt, the statement stated.
In order to guarantee timely work, Shinde has also instructed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to designate a nodal person.
