Paush Amavasya January 2024: The Hindu calendar has thirty Tithis (lunar days), with Amavasya falling in the middle of each month. Amavasya is often referred to as "No-Moon Day" since the moon is not visible in the sky on this day. The Amavasya tithi falling in the month of Paush is known as Paush Amavasya. This year, the Paush Amavasya will be celebrated on 10th January 2024. However, there are certain rules and regulations that must be followed on this day.
Paush Amavasya January 2024: Rules To Must Follow On New Moon Day
- On this day, one should contribute food and clothing (vastra daan and anna daan) to help lessen or remove the negative effects of the malefic influence of the planets Jupiter, Shani, Ketu, and Rahu.

- People can protect themselves from the harmful effects of evil spirits and black magic by performing the Bhandara of khichdi on Paush Amavasya.
- On Amavasya day, it is not advisable to buy a broom. Buying a broom is thought to displeased Goddess Laxmi. The wealth flow within the home will cease as a result. Additionally, it draws bad energy into the home, which eventually compromises the family's riches and well-being.
- On Amavasya, one should abstain from purchasing or consuming alcohol. Drinking alcohol attracts bad energy, which can follow the drinker and their family for a very long period.
- On Amavasya, one should refrain from eating non-vegetarian food, buying pooja items, buying grains and flours, picking tulsi leaves, getting married, and partaking in other auspicious rituals.
- Hindu traditional practices also mention the things that one might do on Amavasya day to purge bad vibes and misfortunes. Given that Amavasya is devoted to "pitru," one must perform Shradh in order to pray for and receive blessings from departed family members.
- Feeding wheat flour balls to fish and five different fruits to cows is said to bring prosperity and abundance in life.
- Amavasya is also a day on which some individuals fast in order to appease their ancestors.
