Amavasya October 2023: The new moon day is known as Amavasya. This day holds great significance for Hindus as the ancestors are worshipped on Amavas day. Amavasya is recognised for cleaning from negative energies, as it occurs when negative energies are at their height and pollutants are at their most potent. On this day, people cleanse themselves by performing amavasya rites. The Amavasya falling in the month of Ashwin (September-October) is known as Mahalaya Amavasya or Sarv Pitru Amavasya. This day is also known by many other names such as Pitru Moksha Amavasya and Pitru Amavasya. This day is very significant to perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals for all the deceased ancestors, pray to them and seek their blessings for a successful life. People can do Shradh of deceased family members on Mahalaya Amavasya if they were unaware of the tithi when they died. Let us check out certain do’s and don’ts that should be followed on the sacred day of Mahalaya Amavasya. 

Amavasya October 2023: Do’s And Don’ts Of Mahalaya Amavasya 

- One should abstain from consuming non-veg, alcohol, onion, garlic, brinjal and masoor dal on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya as it is a sacred day. People should only consume sattvic food. 

- People should perform shradh rituals and tarpan under the guidance of a qualified priest to satisfy the souls of their ancestors. Failing to do so is said to upset the ancestors.

- People can also perform pind daan rituals at a sacred site like Gaya or Kurukshetra as per their wish. Doing this is said to bring virtues and blessings from one’s ancestors. 

- People must feed cows, dogs, ants and crows on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya after performing the Shradh rites as it is considered auspicious.

- Additionally, people should practice cleanliness and abstain from abusing someone or indulging in conflicts on this day as ancestors descend upon the earth to watch out for the lives of their generations on this day.
