Ashadha Amavasya 2025: Significance
Ashadha Amavasya is a spiritually significant day in the Hindu calendar, known for its deep connection to ancestral worship and auspicious rituals. One of the most meaningful ceremonies observed on this day is Deepa Puja, where homes are cleaned and beautifully decorated with colourful rangolis. A special table or chaurang is set up and adorned with lit diyas in vibrant hues, creating a warm and divine atmosphere. This ritual is often dedicated to one’s Ishta Devata or family deity, as well as the five elements—Air, Water, Fire, Sky, and Earth. Many also offer the Puja to Goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati, or Saraswati, believing the light drives away negativity and brings blessings similar to Diwali.
In Maharashtra, this day is joyfully celebrated as Gatari Amavasya. As the holy month of Shravan approaches—when people traditionally give up alcohol and non-vegetarian food—this day becomes a time of indulgence before abstinence begins. Similarly, it’s known as Bheemana Amavasya in Karnataka, Chukkala Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh, and Hariyali Amavasya in Gujarat, each region adding its own cultural flavour to the observance.

Ashadha Amavasya is also considered sacred for honouring ancestors. According to belief, ancestral energies are most active on this day, and acts of charity, prayers, and rituals offered in their name can help guide their souls towards Moksha—liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. This day invites reflection, gratitude, and the chance to connect with both divine forces and one’s lineage in a meaningful way.
Ashadha Amavasya 2025: Rituals
The rituals of Ashadha Amavasya are observed with deep devotion and spiritual intent. The day begins with a purifying bath, ideally in a sacred river. If that isn't possible, adding a few drops of Ganga Jal to regular bath water is considered equally auspicious. This act is believed to cleanse the body and prepare the soul for the rituals ahead. Once cleansed, the individual thoroughly tidies up the space where the puja will be performed, setting the tone for a sacred and peaceful atmosphere.
As the rituals begin, devotees offer water (Arghya) to the Sun God and perform Tarpan to honour and remember their ancestors. Water is also poured at the base of a Peepal tree, and a diya filled with mustard oil is lit. This diya, along with flowers and incense sticks, is again offered during the evening hours, accompanied by mantras to dispel negative energy. Sitting in quiet meditation while chanting helps absorb spiritual energy and brings inner peace.
Throughout the day, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva are worshipped with devotion. A satvik meal is prepared and offered to the deities. To complete the day’s observance, devotees engage in acts of kindness by donating food and clothes to those in need, believed to bring prosperity, peace and divine blessings.
