A legendary story behind Atla Taddi revolves around a princess who attempted to observe this fast as suggested by Goddess Gauri to find a suitable groom. However, she fainted due to hunger and thirst, and her brothers showed her a mirror reflecting fire, resembling the full moon, to trick her into breaking her fast. This act had unforeseen consequences, and years later, the princess found herself betrothed to an elderly man, forcing her to flee into the forest.

Under a banyan tree, the princess encountered Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, who revealed that her incomplete ritual was the reason for her predicament. She was advised to complete the ritual properly, and upon doing so, she married a handsome young man of her choice. This story highlights the significance of devotion and completing rituals with dedication. Atla Taddi is celebrated in honour of Goddess Gauri, where women fast and offer prayers for their husbands' well-being and longevity.
