Located in the Sahyadri Hills of Maharashtra, Bhimashankar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Every year, millions of devotees visit this sacred shrine to seek Lord Shiva blessings and cleanse their sins. However, the origin of this Jyotirlinga is linked to a demon named Bhimasura.
According to belief, when Bhima tried to attack an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, he appeared in a blazing form and destroyed the demon. After this, at the request of the gods, Lord Shiva manifested as Bhimeshwar Jyotirlinga.
Who Was Bhimasura And Why Did Lord Shiva Kill Him?
According to the Shiva Purana, Bhima was the son of Kumbhakarna. When he got the news of his father being killed by Lord Rama, he became angry. To get his revenge against the gods, he performed intense penance to Lord Brahma and became more powerful.
To establish his power, he attacked various regions and defeated Sudakshina, the king of Kamarupa, and imprisoned him. King Sudakshina was a devotee of Lord Shiva. In jail, Sudakshina created a Shivling and worshipped Lord Shiva.
When Bhima tried to destroy the Shivling, Lord Shiva appeared. He destroyed the demon after a fierce battle. After this, gods and sages requested Lord Shiva to manifest himself and remain as a Jyotirlinga. This is how the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga Temple came to existence.
