Every year, during the holy month of Sawan, thousands of devotees observe the Sawan Vrat with unwavering faith. During this sacred period, it is said that observing a fast on Monday is most significant, as this day is particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among these devotees, many unmarried women and men observe a fast with the hope of finding a suitable life partner.

This is one of the most common beliefs associated with Sawan: that observing the fast will help people find their desired life partner. This tradition has been passed down through generations. Let's understand the reality behind this belief in detail.

What Is The Connection Between Sawan Vrat And Marriage?

The belief behind keeping the Sawan vrat is associated with Goddess Parvati. According to the Shiva Purana, Goddess Parvati performed intense penance (tapasya) to attain Lord Shiva as her husband. Pleased by her deep devotion and determination, Lord Shiva agreed to be her husband.

Inspired by this story, many unmarried women began observing Sawan Somwar Vrat with the belief that they would also be blessed with a caring, understanding and righteous life partner. However, people often forget that Goddess Parvati's intense penance was not only to attain lord Shiva as her husband but also to strengthen her devotion and spiritual connection with him.

Can Fasting During Sawan Really Help You Find Your Desired Life Partner?

According to Dr Jai Madaan, Celebrity Spiritual Mentor and Motivational Speaker, this is one of the most common questions she receives from young men and women even during Sawan.

She explains that Sawan vrat should not be seen as a ritual that changes destiny overnight. Instead, it is a practice of changing the spiritual energy of the individual.

Dr Jai Madaan says that in Sanatan Dharma, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are the ultimate forms of divine companions. Goddess Parvati's tapasya wasn't for marriage; it was for spiritual connection with the husband she was meant to have.

She further explains that the month of Sawan is very powerful astrologically and spiritually. Fasting and reciting ‘Om Namah Shivaya' while visiting Lord Shiva temples is highly beneficial. Practising self-discipline purifies the mind and creates positive karmas. As a person's thoughts become pure and intentions become sincere, they naturally build healthier relationships and better life decisions.

Dr Jai Madan also states that faith must not be a substitute for action. In addition to prayer, it is important to develop emotional maturity, self-worth, communication, and understanding. While astrology may give indications when it is a good time to get married and what the solutions are, actions and karma play an important part in shaping the future.

Sawan vrat should not be regarded as a means of procuring a spouse. Rather, it should be seen as a chance to get closer to oneself and to the divine. The right relationships can come into life just in time when a person has achieved inner peace and balance.
