Chaitra Navratri 2025 Ghatasthapana: Significance

Navratri celebrations begin with the significant ritual of Navratri Ghatasthastapana or Durga Puja Kalash Sthapana. This ritual is performed on the first day of the Chaitra month Shukla Paksha, before worshipping Goddess Shailputri. Devotees fill a Kalash, a symbol of feminine power and creation with water and coins and submerge mango leaves in it. A coconut is then placed on the Kalash, representing the deity. The Kalash and its contents embody vitality, power, luck and auspiciousness, representing the Mother Goddess.

In North India, people sow Jowar seeds in a separate clay pot which is known as the Navdhanya or Khetari. It takes nine days to grow and symbolises life and creation. Therefore, the Kalash Sthapana ritual is essential for Navratri celebrations. For the next nine days, devotees worship and praise the Goddess, seeking her blessings and protection.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Ghatasthapana: Puja Vidhi

Before performing Ghatasthapana, clean the puja area and take a bath during the Brahma Muhurat. Establish the Ghata at an auspicious time in the morning by wrapping red thread around the neck of a clay pot, filling it with water and adding turmeric, vermilion and coins. Place five mango leaves on top and cover them with a small mud container or a coconut. Create a chowki for the goddess using new clothes and establish Gaur-Ganesh nearby. Begin the Ghata puja by invoking the goddess, sowing barley seeds and lighting an akhand jyoti. Offer worship to the goddess using sandalwood, flowers, incense and Panchamrit. Additionally, perform aarti to seek desired blessings.

During Navratri, barley seeds are sown in a clay pot placed in front of the Kalash. According to tradition, barley was the first crop to be harvested at the beginning of creation, making it a symbol of a complete harvest. This ritual is an essential part of Ghatasthapana, marking the beginning of the nine-day celebration of Navratri.
