Chaitra Navratri 2025: The significant Hindu festival - Chaitra Navratri is celebrated over nine days in March or April. The festivities begin on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra and conclude on the ninth day. Also known as Vasanta Navratri or Rama Navratri, this festival honours the nine forms of Goddess Shakti. Each day is dedicated to worshipping a different form of the Goddess. The rituals and customs are similar to those followed during Shardiya Navratri, with the ninth day marking the birth anniversary of Lord Ram. Devotees worship Goddess Shakti and seek her blessings.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 1 Devi: Goddess Shailputri

Significance: Shailputri Devi, the first form of Goddess Durga is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. As the daughter of Himalayan King Himavat, she embodies purity and spiritual growth. Riding a bull named Nandi, she holds a trident and lotus, symbolising her connection to Goddess Parvati. Shailputri Devi is believed to grant spiritual energy, helping devotees achieve higher spiritual growth. She is revered as Purna Prakriti Durga.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 2 Devi: Goddess Brahmacharini

Significance: Brahmacharini Mata, the second form of Nav Durga is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. As the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati, she embodies devotion and determination. To win Lord Shiva's hand in marriage, she performed intense tapasya for thousands of years. Depicted walking barefoot, holding a prayer bead and a water pot, Brahmacharini Mata symbolises a simple life of devotion, meditation and inner strength.

Significance: Maa Chandraghanta, a powerful form of Goddess Durga is revered as the 'shakti' of Lord Shiva. According to the Shiva Maha Purana, she embodies the feminine energy accompanying each aspect of Shiva. Riding a tiger, Maa Chandraghanta showcases her fearless nature, while her ten arms wield weapons like swords, tridents and bows. This goddess of spiritual strength represents calmness and peace, yet transforms into a fierce warrior to vanquish evil and protect righteousness, inspiring devotees with her unwavering courage and determination.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 4 Devi: Goddess Kushmanda

Significance: Mata Kushmanda is revered as the creator of the world, credited with bringing life to the universe with her divine smile. She is the goddess of light, energy and vitality, embodying power and courage. Her name reflects her role, with ‘Ku’ meaning little, ‘Ushma’ meaning warmth and energy, and ‘Anda’ symbolising a cosmic egg. Riding a lion with eight arms, she holds weapons, a rosary and a pot of nectar, inspiring devotees with her life-giving energy.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 5 Devi: Goddess Skandmata

Significance: Maa Skandamata, the fifth form of Goddess Durga is worshipped on the fifth day of Navaratri. As the mother of Lord Kartikeya, she embodies the strength and nurturing spirit of a mother. Riding a lion, she is depicted holding her son and carrying lotuses with one hand offering blessings. Worshipping Skandamata brings double blessings - from her and Lord Kartikeya. Devotees believe she attracts fortune, luck and knowledge. Her worship is said to bring joy and prosperity to one's life.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 6 Devi: Goddess Katyayani

Significance: Mata Katyayani, a fierce form of Goddess Durga is revered as the slayer of the demon Mahishasura, bringing peace to the world. Seated on a lion, she is depicted holding a sword in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left, symbolising her strength and serenity. As the Mahishasurmardini, Goddess Katyayani is worshipped for her bravery and power. Worshipping Katyayani Mata empowers devotees with courage, strength and protection, granting victory and fulfilling desires - especially in love and relationships and bringing happiness in marriage.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 7 Devi: Goddess Kaalratri

Significance: Maa Kaalratri, a fearsome form of Devi Durga is revered for destroying ignorance and darkness. According to legend, Goddess Chandi created Kaalratri from her forehead and she is often called the ‘night of death’. Despite her intimidating appearance - dark skin, unkempt hair and a fearsome expression - Maa Kaalratri is kind-hearted towards her devotees. Riding a donkey, she wields a sword and thunderbolt, while offering protection and blessings with her other two hands. Her bravery is celebrated for defeating the demons - Chanda and Munda.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 8 Devi: Goddess Mahagauri

Significance: Mahagauri Mata is worshipped on the eighth day of Navaratri and her name means ‘extremely fair and radiant’. With the power to fulfil her devotees' desires, Mahagauri brings relief from suffering and offers a life of peace and purity. Riding a white bull, she carries a trident and a drum, while her other two hands offer blessings and protection. Devotees offer coconuts to Mahagauri, symbolising peace, purity and forgiveness. By worshipping her, devotees believe their desires will be fulfilled and they will be blessed with a life of happiness and prosperity.

Chaitra Navratri 2025 Day 9 Devi: Goddess Siddhidatri

Significance: Maa Siddhidhatri, the ninth form of Goddess Durga is revered as the giver of supernatural powers. Her name combines ‘Siddhi’, meaning supernatural powers and ‘Datri’, meaning giver. Depicted seated on a lotus or riding a lion, she has four arms holding a lotus, mace, chakra and conch. With a calm and serene appearance, she embodies her role as a giver of knowledge and blessings. Both gods and humans worship her and even Lord Shiva is said to have gained his powers from her, highlighting her significance as a powerful and benevolent deity.
