This auspicious day is celebrated in Chollangi, a village situated near Kakinada, on the banks of the Godavari River. Notably, Chollangi is the point where seven streams of the Godavari River merge with the Bay of Bengal.
During Chollangi Amavasya, thousands of devotees gather to take a holy dip in the river, seeking redemption from their sins. This sacred ritual is part of the Sapta Sagara Yatra, a pilgrimage to the seven mouths of the Godavari River. Devotees actively participate in various rituals during Chollangi Amavasya. They begin by taking a holy dip in the Godavari River, believing that this sacred ritual will wash away their sins. After the dip, devotees worship Lord Shiva and offer prayers to their ancestors. They also perform Pitru Tarpana, a ritual where they offer food and water to their ancestors, seeking their blessings.
The devotees also perform other rituals, such as offering Naivedyam (food offerings) to the deities and performing special pujas (worship services) at the temples. Many devotees also participate in the Sapta Sagara Yatra, a pilgrimage to the seven mouths of the Godavari River.
