Dattatreya Jayanti 2025: Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Dattatreya, who is considered an incarnation of the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. As per the Hindu Panchang, this sacred festival is celebrated on the Purnima tithi of the month of Margashirsha and holds special significance mainly in Maharashtra. Devotees perform puja and observe fast on this day. The worship of Lord Dattatreya brings relief from ancestral curses and provides salvation. On this auspicious occasion, devotees additionally perform special rituals to invoke the grace and blessings of Lord Dattatreya. This year, Dattatreya Jayanti will be observed on 4th December 2025.

Dattatreya Jayanti 2025: Significance
Lord Dattatreya is also known as Parabrahmamurti, Sadguru, and Shri Gurudevdatta. According to beliefs, Lord Dattatreya was born to merge the ideologies of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. This is why he is considered a manifestation of the Trinity. Lord Dattatreya had many gurus and sought refuge from them. It is said that he had 24 gurus. His gurus included the eight natural elements, including earth, water, fire, air, sea, moon, sky, and sun. He also accepted many living creatures as his gurus, including a moth, fish, crow, deer, snake, elephant, and spider, among them. He also accepted a child, a blacksmith, a prostitute named Pingala, and a girl as his gurus. Lord Dattatreya states that we should receive knowledge from anyone with discretion, and we should accept anyone who imparts knowledge as our guru.

According to religious beliefs, Lord Dattatreya incarnated on the full moon day of the month of Margashirsha during the Pradosh period. It is believed that worshipping him fulfills all one's wishes. Furthermore, if someone is suffering from ancestral curses, they should chant their mantras. Doing so frees them from ancestral curses.

Dattatreya Jayanti 2025: Rituals
Dattatreya Jayanti puja is performed similarly to other pujas. Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a sacred bath and fast throughout the day. Special flowers, incense, lamps, and sweets are offered during the puja. Devotees sing hymns and recite scriptures such as the Avadhoot Gita and the Jivanmukta Gita. During the puja, the idol or picture of Lord Dattatreya is smeared with sandalwood, kumkum, and turmeric.
Devotees also perform seven parikramas around the idol or image of Lord Dattatreya and perform the aarti. Devotees also chant mantras like -Shri Gurudattatreya Namah or Om Shri Gurudev Datta. The sacred occasion of Dattatreya Jayanti is considered beneficial for purifying the mind and soul. Temples like Manik Prabhu celebrate a seven-day festival dedicated to Lord Dattatreya to commemorate his birth anniversary by holding events from Ekadashi to Purnima.
