Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2023 Story

According to a legend, Goddess Lakshmi was not pleased with Lord Vishnu's odd sleeping habits. Lord Vishnu would alternate between sleeping for many days at a time and staying awake for many days at a time. Goddess Lakshmi expressed her displeasure to Lord Vishnu and asked him to help her find a way out. She also informed him that it took a long time for even the Devas, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma, to meet him. At that moment, Lord Vishnu promised Goddess Lakshmi that he would resolve this issue.

After coming back, Lord Vishnu had an uninterrupted sleep for four months. Since then, this period came to be known as Chaturmas.
