Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2024: Significance And Rituals Of This Day
Prabodhini Ekadashi, a significant Hindu festival, originates from the Skanda Purana, narrated by Lord Brahma to Sage Narada. This auspicious day marks the beginning of sacred ceremonies like marriages, child naming, and housewarming. It holds great importance for the Swaminarayan sect, commemorating their founder's initiation by Guru Ramanand Swami.

Devotees observe a strict fast on Prabodhini Ekadashi, abstaining from food and water. They rise early, take a purifying bath, and visit Lord Vishnu temples in the evening for puja rituals. At home, they draw Lord Vishnu's picture, offer lamps, fruits, and vegetables, and sing bhakti songs. Children make noise and light mustard torches to symbolically wake Lord Vishnu from his cosmic sleep.
The day also marks Tulsi Vivah, the sacred marriage of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Tulsi. This ceremony may be performed on Prabodhini Ekadashi or the following day. By observing this vrat, devotees seek forgiveness for past sins and strive for salvation. Taking a bath on this day is considered more beneficial than bathing in holy rivers. With devotion and prayers, believers aim to attain moksha and reach Vaikunth after death, seeking Lord Vishnu's blessings and guidance.
