Dhanteras 2023: The first day of Diwali is celebrated on Dhanteras, also called Dhanatrayodashi. On the thirteenth lunar day (Trayodashi) of Krishna Paksha, or the dark fortnight, it is observed on the Hindu calendar in the month of Kartik. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the Amrit Manthan. Thus, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Kubera are worshipped on this auspicious day of Trayodashi. Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, is revered on Dhanteras as well. He is thought to have transmitted Ayurvedic knowledge to improve humankind and alleviate disease-related suffering. In addition, lamps are placed outside dwellings as part of the Yamadeep ceremony on this Trayodashi Tithi in order to please the God of Death, Yama, and shield loved ones from a premature demise. This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on 10th November 2023.

People also purchase gold, silver and utensils on the day of Dhanteras. Let us check out the shubh muhurat and the significance of purchasing gold, silver and utensils on the day of Dhanteras further.

Dhanteras 2023: Significance Of Purchasing Gold, Silver And Utensils On This Day

People usually buy gold and silver goods on the day of Dhanteras, mostly in the form of jewellery and certain kitchenware. This is due to the Hindu belief that Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, came from the celestial sea during its churning, as previously stated. She emerged holding a pot of gold, signifying prosperity. On this day, in remembrance of her, people invest in gold in the hopes of being blessed with success in the upcoming year.

Another legend is associated with the son of King Hima, whose horoscope foretold that he would die from a snake bite on the fourth day of his wedding. His wife refused to let him sleep during the day to challenge this prediction. She kept a few lamps and all of her ornaments by the door at night, all neatly arranged in a basket. To keep her husband awake, she kept singing songs. The God of Death, Lord Yama, was blinded by the light coming from the gems when he arrived the following day to take his life in the shape of a serpent. Yama departed from the couple's house and was unable to enter their residence as well. In order to celebrate the woman's ingenuity in protecting her husband, people purchase gold and silver on this day to save themselves and their loved ones.
