Dhanurmasam 2024: Significance

Dhanurmasa, spanning December and January, is considered an inauspicious period for new beginnings and worldly activities in some Indian regions. However, it's highly auspicious for spiritual pursuits, especially worshipping Lord Vishnu during early morning hours. Devotees chant the Vishnu Sahasranama during this period. Interestingly, Dhanurmasa is not an independent month in most Indian calendars, except for the Malayalam calendar used in Kerala.

In Hindu tradition, mornings during Dhanurmasa are ideal for worship. Temples across India hold special pre-dawn worship services. Devotees consider it highly auspicious to worship Lord Shiva, especially on the day of the Arudra star. Many visit Shiva temples before sunrise for darshan, and celebrations also take place in homes. This period is set apart for worship, and activities like marriages are generally avoided.

Dhanurmasam 2024: Rituals

According to Hindu tradition, Dhanurmasa is a special month for spiritual pursuits. Lord Krishna declares in the Bhagavad Gita that he manifests the most during this month. As a result, sages have dedicated this month to devotional activities. During Dhanurmasam, Hindus believe that the gods wake up early, and special prayers are offered to Lord Vishnu during the auspicious Brahma Muhurta period.

During Dhanurmasa, devotees pay tribute to Sri Bhudevi (Andal) by reciting Tiruppavai, a Tamil composition. According to legend, Sri Andal spent her youth devoted to realizing oneness with Lord Vishnu, ultimately achieving union through devotion. Tiruppavai is a poem where Sri Andal imagines herself as Lord Narayana's bride, yearning to serve him.

Throughout Dhanurmasa, daily morning hymns are recited, followed by the recitation of Tiruppavai. Devotees offer sweet dishes like Pongal and Pulihora as offerings and distribute them as prasadam. This month is a time for spiritual reflection, devotion, and connecting with the divine.
