Orange, green, white, yellow, blue, and red should be the colours used in lighting. These are the primary colours that can be employed in lighting to uplift your environment and mood. The following are some fundamental guidelines for using these particular hues in light or rangoli: 

- If the main door is located in the northeast or northeast, green and yellow should be the dominant colours.

- The colour yellow is used if the main door is facing east.

- The colour red should be used to emphasise the main entrance in the Southeast.

- Main doors facing the south, southwest, or west should have red and blue combination lights.

- Blue must be the dominant colour in the Northwest.

Using various colours to create a design and greet guests, making rangoli for Diwali is a custom dating back centuries. Rangoli patterns should have an ethnic feel to them and convey an unending feeling of time.

- It is not appropriate to draw symbols like the swastika or Om in the floor rangoli.

- The footprints that represent Laxmiji's entrance should point inside the home rather than outside.
