Dussehra 2025 or Vijayadashami, is one of India’s most cherished festivals, celebrating the timeless victory of good over evil. Observed on the tenth day of Navratri, it commemorates Lord Rama’s triumph over the demon king Ravana and Goddess Durga’s conquest of Mahishasura. Across the country, each region brings its own customs and traditions to the celebrations, from dramatic Ram Lila performances to vibrant processions and rituals. This diversity makes Dussehra a beautiful reflection of India’s rich cultural heritage, inspiring devotion, joy, and moral values, while reminding everyone of the power of righteousness, courage and faith. 1. Shami Puja: On Dussehra, it is customary to worship the Shami tree and offer its leaves after the Ravana Dahan ceremony. People also light diyas beneath the Peepal, Shami, and Banyan trees as well as inside temples. Homes are decorated and illuminated with diyas to celebrate the festival, creating a warm and sacred atmosphere that honours tradition and brings joy to families and communities.
2. Durga Saptashati Or Chandi Path: On this day, it is traditional to recite the Durga Saptashati or Chandi Paath. Doing so is believed to bring success and victory in all endeavours.
3. Ravan Dahan: On Dussehra, the Ravana Dahan takes place during Pradosh Kaal. Before leaving home to witness the event, apply Tilak. After watching the Ravana Dahan, take Shami leaves and give them to others while wishing them a Happy Dussehra. Make sure to bring home the wood of burnt Ravan figurine, as it is considered highly auspicious.
4. Kalam-Granth Puja: On Dussehra, during Abhijit Muhurta, teachers, astrologers, scholars, writers, artists, students and others must worship their pens and books. They must offer prayers to Goddess Durga, Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Saraswati for knowledge, guidance and success in their work.

5. Shastra Puja: On Dussehra, during Vijaya Muhurta, soldiers, police, warriors and weapon makers should worship their weapons in a ritual known as Ayudha Puja. They must additionally offer prayers to Goddess Aparajita, Goddess Kali and Lord Shri Ram along with Mother Durga. Weapons are worshipped with devotion while remembering Chandrika and seeking victory in all endeavours.
6. Account Book Worship: During Abhijeet Muhurta, businessmen should worship their account books, weighing scales, safes and other tools of trade. They offer prayers to Goddess Durga, Lord Shri Ram, Goddess Aparajita and Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and success in their work.
7. Make Gulgule Or Gilki Pakodas: On this day, devotees must prepare a variety of dishes and enjoy freshly fried Gilki Bhajiyas. Devotees should also make Gilki Pakodas and Gulgule, a sweet version of the pakoras, to celebrate the occasion. Make sure to offer them as bhog to the deities.
