Ganesh Chaturthi 2024: Do’s And Don’ts For Ganesh Chaturthi
Do’s:
- Bringing Home the Idol: It is considered auspicious to bring home Ganesha’s idol for 1, 3, 7, or 10 days. Each duration holds its own significance, but the most common practice is to keep the idol for 10 days.
- Idol Characteristics: The idol should include a symbol of a mouse (Ganesha’s vehicle) and modak (his favourite sweet). It is recommended that the idol be in a sitting position, which signifies calmness and stability.
- Placement of the Idol: The idol should be placed facing either the East or North direction, as these are considered to bring positive energy and blessings.
- Trunk Position: The trunk of the idol should be curved to the left, as this represents the cooling, peaceful energy of Ganesha.
- Daily Prayers: Devotees should offer prayers daily in the morning and evening, lighting diyas (lamps) to invoke the presence of Ganesha. Everything, including water, food, and prasad, should be offered to the deity first before consumption by devotees.

Don’ts:
- Dietary Restrictions: After Ganpati Sthapana (installation of the idol), it is advised to avoid consuming onions, garlic, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol. These foods are considered tamsik, which can diminish the sattvic (pure) vibrations of the household.
- Idol Placement Restrictions: The idol should not be placed beneath stairs, in bedrooms, or against the walls of bathrooms, as these locations are considered inauspicious.
- Trunk Position Caution: The trunk of the idol should not be curved to the right, as this is associated with more intense and potentially difficult-to-handle energies of Ganesha.
- Primary Door Caution: It is recommended not to close the primary door of the house when introducing the idol or during the visarjan (immersion) ceremony, as an open door symbolises the welcoming of divine blessings and the seamless departure of Ganesha’s energy.
