Govardhan Puja 2024: The auspicious Govardhan Puja honours Lord Krishna's miraculous pastime of lifting the Govardhan Mountain to protect his people from torrential rains. This festival symbolises Krishna's unwavering care and provision. A key aspect is offering 56 Bhog, or Chhappan Bhog, to Lord Krishna. This elaborate spread of 56 dishes, including sweets, savouries, and desserts, represents gratitude for nature's bounty. By offering Chhappan Bhog, devotees seek Krishna's blessings and protection. The ritual reinforces the importance of preserving the environment and acknowledging the divine connection between humans, nature, and the divine. Through Govardhan Puja, devotees reaffirm their faith in Krishna's omnipotence and benevolence. This year, Govardhan Puja will be observed on 3rd November 2024.
Govardhan Puja 2024: Why 56 Bhog Is Offered To Lord Krishna?
According to legend, the Chappan Bhog or 56-dish offering to Lord Krishna originated in Vrindavan. Villagers would offer grand feasts to Lord Indra for good harvests, but Krishna, considering this unfair, advised them to stop. Angered, Indra unleashed torrential rains, flooding the village. To protect his people, Krishna miraculously lifted Govardhan Mountain on his little finger, sheltering everyone for seven days.
During this time, Krishna fasted, normally accustomed to eight dishes daily. After the rains subsided, grateful villagers prepared 56 dishes (eight dishes x seven days) to thank Krishna for his protection. This heartfelt gesture became the Chappan Bhog tradition, continuing to this day. The offering symbolises the villagers' devotion and Krishna's divine care. Janmashtami and Govardhan Puja celebrations now include this significant ritual, honouring Krishna's selfless love and unwavering protection.
