Gowri Habba 2024: The Gowri Habba Festival, observed a day before Ganesh Chaturthi, is a significant Hindu festival. It honours Goddess Gauri, Lord Ganesha's mother and Lord Shiva's consort, with great importance placed on the Gauri Habba pooja. Predominantly celebrated in southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, married women worship Goddess Gauri to seek blessings for a harmonious married life. Notably, in northern states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, this puja is referred to as Hartalika, highlighting its widespread cultural significance and relevance across India. This festival showcases the diverse yet unified devotion to Goddess Gauri across the country. This year, the Gowri Habba or Gowri Ganesha Festival is being celebrated on 6th September 2024.

Preparation For Puja 

Preparations for Gauri Puja commence in advance, with thorough home cleaning and decoration using flowers, rangoli, and lights. Women gather essential items like turmeric, kumkum, flowers, fruits, and sweets, setting the stage for a reverent celebration.

Invoking Goddess Gowri

On Gauri Habba, a decorated platform showcases Goddess Gowri's idol, adorned with new attire, jewellery, and flowers. The 'Kalasha Sthapana' ritual follows, symbolising the Goddess's presence with a pot containing water, turmeric, and a coconut, inviting her blessings.

Puja Rituals

The puja commences with chanting and hymns dedicated to Goddess Gowri. Women offer flowers, fruits, and sweets, applying turmeric and kumkum to the idol. The aarti ritual involves waving a lit lamp while singing devotional songs, seeking the Goddess's grace.

Prasadam

Following the puja, the offerings (prasadam) are distributed among family and neighbours, believed to carry the Goddess's blessings. This sharing symbolises unity and spreads joy, acknowledging the Goddess's benevolence.

Vratham

Many women observe a fast (vratham) on Gauri Habba, consuming only fruits and water until the puja concludes. This fasting purifies the mind and body, intensifying devotion to the Goddess and seeking her guidance.
