Guru Nanak Jayanti 2023: 5 Life-Changing Teaching By Guru Nanak Dev Ji

1. Naam Japo - Recite the name of the Almighty God. Nanak Dev Ji emphasized that one must always chant the names of the Lord in order to defeat the five evils that occupy a human’s mind - lust, wrath, greed, attachment, and ego (Kama, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, and Ahankar).

2. Kirat Karo - This means that one must strive to earn a living with honesty. Enriching oneself at the expense of others is not a good idea. Guru Nanak Dev Ji advocated working hard and earning money ethically.

3. Vand Chakho - Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji stressed the importance of sharing what God has given you with others and lending a hand to those in need. Hence, this is also one of the most important tenets of Sikhism as well.

4. Speak Truth Without Fear - Sri Guru Nanak Dev advised speaking the truth fearlessly at all times. He asserted that upholding the truth steadfastly is lasting, whereas hiding lies to gain an advantage is only ephemeral. One of the 'hukums' (commands) of the Guru is also to stick to the truth. Sri Guru Nanak Dev also emphasised the significance of having a guru in one's life. It is impossible to find God without a genuine Guru, he remarked.

5. Sarbat Da Bhala - This means that one must pray for everyone’s happiness and always wish well for them. Regardless of gender, caste, or religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji advised that everyone should seek the well-being of others before expecting the same goodwill in return.

"Nanak Naam Chardi Kala Tere Bhane Sarbat da bhala," which translates to "Nanak with your name and blessings, may everyone in the world prosper and be in peace," is spoken at the conclusion of the daily Ardaas prayer by the members of the Sikh community. In this prayer, a person asks the Lord to grant the well-being of all people.
