This year, Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti will be observed on 15th November 2024. This is going to be the 555th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: Significance

Guru Nanak Jayanti acknowledges Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who spread a message of compassion, unity, and equality. Through the mantra "Ik Onkar", he emphasised the single, supreme reality and eternal truth. This day holds great significance in Sikhism and is also known as Guru Nanak Dev Ji Gurpurab or Prakash Parv.

Guru Nanak's timeless teachings focus on overcoming five key human weaknesses, often referred to as the "five thieves": attachment, greed, lust, pride, and anger. He encouraged people to rise above these vices and cultivate a life of virtue, self-discipline, and self-awareness. His soulful lessons promote inner peace, harmony, and brotherhood, guiding individuals towards a path of spiritual growth and enlightenment. Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: Rituals

Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations are a vibrant blend of energy and devotion. The festivities begin two days prior with the Akhand Path, a 48-hour continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at Gurudwaras. A day before the birthday, the Nagarkirtan procession takes place, led by the Panj Pyare, featuring soulful hymns, traditional music, and Gatka performances.

On the day of Jayanti, festivities commence early with morning hymns (Asaa-Ki-Vaar), scripture readings (Path), and Kirtan between 3:00-6:00 am. The Prabhat Pheri procession follows, winding through neighbourhoods to mark the auspicious day. Community lunches (Langars) welcome people of all backgrounds, regardless of class, caste, or creed.

As sunset approaches, devotees gather for evening prayers (Rehras) and Kirtan. At 1:15 am, believed to be Guru Nanak's birth time, Gurbani is sung, culminating the celebrations. This soulful conclusion leaves a lasting impact on all. Throughout the day, Gurudwaras buzz with devotion, music, and community spirit, honouring Guru Nanak's legacy and promoting unity and compassion among all.
