Guru Purnima 2025, observed on the Purnima Tithi of the Ashadha month, holds deep spiritual significance as it honours the guiding light of Gurus in our lives. In Indian tradition, a Guru is seen not just as a teacher but as a divine presence who dispels darkness and awakens inner wisdom. This sacred day is an opportunity for disciples to express heartfelt gratitude, seek blessings and reflect on the teachings they’ve received. It’s also celebrated as Vyasa Purnima, in honour of Sage Veda Vyasa, the legendary author of the Mahabharata. Guru Purnima reminds us of the invaluable role of teachers in our journey. This year, Guru Purnima falls on 10th July 2025.

1. Ved Vyasa
Ved Vyasa is one of the most revered Gurus in Sanatan Dharma and is honoured on Guru Purnima. He is credited with composing the epic Mahabharata, a timeless guide on life, duty, and dharma. He also compiled the four Vedas – Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda, giving structure to vast spiritual knowledge. His wisdom and contributions earned him the title of the “Guru of all Gurus” in Hindu tradition.
2. Valmiki
Maharishi Valmiki is the celebrated author of the Ramayana, one of Hinduism’s most revered scriptures. Once a bandit, he transformed into a sage through deep realisation and guidance, showing how anyone can walk the path of righteousness. Through the Ramayana, he shared the story of Lord Rama’s ideal life, offering spiritual and moral lessons that continue to inspire millions across generations with values of truth, devotion and duty.
3. Vishwamitra
Vishwamitra began life as a king but became a powerful sage through intense penance and spiritual discipline. His journey from a royal ruler to a Brahmarishi symbolises human potential and inner transformation. He is credited with composing significant portions of the Rigveda and imparting the Gayatri Mantra, a sacred hymn for spiritual awakening. Vishwamitra’s teachings continue to inspire those seeking growth through determination and divine wisdom.
4. Adi Shankaracharya
Adi Shankaracharya was a profound philosopher and saint who revived Sanatan Dharma during a time of decline. He established the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, teaching the unity of the soul with the Supreme. Travelling across India, he founded four major mathas (spiritual centres) and wrote insightful commentaries on the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutras. His clarity and compassion helped preserve Hindu philosophy and unify diverse spiritual thought.

5. Patanjali
Sage Patanjali is considered the father of Yoga in its philosophical form. His work bridges physical practice and mental clarity, guiding seekers towards inner peace. Through his teachings, Patanjali helped elevate Yoga from a practice to a complete way of living in harmony with the body, mind, and spirit.
6. Kapila Muni
Kapila Muni is known as the founder of the Samkhya philosophy, one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu thought. His teachings focus on understanding the duality between consciousness (Purusha) and matter (Prakriti). Kapila’s wisdom helped spiritual seekers make sense of the world and their inner nature. 7. Dattatreya
Dattatreya is a unique figure in Sanatan Dharma, considered an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. His teachings are found in texts like the Avadhuta Gita, where he speaks of learning from nature and life itself. Dattatreya’s example encourages simplicity, self-realisation and recognising the divine in all aspects of creation.
