Hariyali Amavasya 2025: Significance
Hariyali Amavasya is a spiritually meaningful day in the Hindu tradition, observed three days before the colourful festival of Hariyali Teej. Falling in the sacred month of Shravan, the fifth month in the Hindu lunar calendar, it is closely linked with Lord Shiva and the onset of the monsoon. The rains are seen as a sign of abundance and hope for a fruitful harvest, and this connection with nature is reflected in the customs observed on this day. Many people perform Pitru Tarpan to honour their ancestors and also take part in acts of charity and kindness, which are believed to bring spiritual blessings.
In Hindu culture, trees are considered deeply sacred, and on Hariyali Amavasya, worship of the Peepal tree is especially significant. It is seen as a symbol of divine life and eternal energy. Planting saplings is also encouraged, representing renewal, growth and our respectful bond with nature. The day serves as a beautiful reminder of the harmony between humanity and the Earth, as well as the divine blessings that come from nurturing and protecting our environment.

Hariyali Amavasya 2025: Rituals
Hariyali Amavasya is deeply rooted in ancestral worship in Hinduism. On this sacred day, devotees rise early, bathe, and offer prayers to their ancestors or ‘pitrs’. A special puja is performed, followed by preparing a traditional meal that is offered to Brahmins as a gesture of reverence. It is typically the male members of the family who carry out these rites to seek peace and blessings for their departed loved ones. The entire ritual carries a deep sense of gratitude and spiritual connection with one’s lineage.
This day also holds great importance as a time to worship Lord Shiva. Devotees visit temples, chant Vedic mantras, and sing bhajans in His honour, asking for good rainfall and a fruitful harvest. Performing Shiva Puja on Hariyali Amavasya is believed to invite wealth and overall well-being. In many places, people also observe a fast, eating only once after all rituals are completed, focusing their energies on devotion and prayer.
