Hariyali Teej 2024: Rituals Associated With This Significant Festival
Hariyali Teej perpetuates a cherished tradition where married women receive thoughtful gifts from their in-laws, including traditional attire, jewellery, henna, vermilion, and sweets. Women typically adorn themselves in green lehengas or sarees, symbolising their marital status. These gifts, known as Shringar items, hold profound significance for married women, representing the sanctity of marriage. According to Hindu customs, wearing all 16 adornments is believed to safeguard husbands from harm. This practice of gifting 'Sindhara' is especially meaningful for newlyweds. As part of the celebration, women visit their parental home, where delectable food is prepared and enjoyed by all. A key aspect of Hariyali Teej is the application of henna on hands and feet, a tradition integral to Shringara Teej. The depth of the henna's colour is believed to reflect the depth of affection from their husbands, with a deeper hue signifying greater love. In some regions, women even use henna to inscribe their beloved's name on their hands, further emphasizing the festival's romantic significance.
The Vat Vriksha tradition is an integral part of Shravani Teej celebrations, where swings are hung from the sacred Banyan tree or in homes, allowing women to revel in joyous swinging, dancing, and singing with friends. On Hariyali Teej, women are given the freedom to indulge in merriment and pleasure. The Banyan tree, considered sacred in Hindu mythology, symbolizes knowledge with its hanging branches, making worshipping it on this occasion auspicious. Devotees observe the rigorous Nirjala Vrat, abstaining from food and water throughout the day, culminating in moon worship and breaking their fast. Women seek Teej Mata's (Goddess Parvati's) blessings for their husband's prosperity and well-being, accompanied by heartfelt songs and worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's idols. This joyous celebration is a testament to the devotion and revelry of women on this sacred occasion.
