Holika Dahan 2025: Significance

According to Hindu legends, the demon king Hiranyakashyap declared himself a god, but his son Prahlad refused to worship him, instead dedicating himself to Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap was enraged by his son's defiance and ordered his sister Holika to burn Prahlad alive. Holika, who was immune to fire, was instructed to sit in the flames with Prahlad in her lap.

However, Lord Vishnu intervened, saving Prahlad from the fire while Holika was consumed by the flames. This incident is commemorated as Holika Dahan, a ritual observed on the full moon day of the Phalgun month. Later, Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha and defeated Hiranyakashyap, freeing people from his tyranny. This significant victory is celebrated through the ritual of Holika Dahan, highlighting the ultimate triumph of righteousness and justice.

Holika Dahan 2025: Rituals

Before Holika Dahan, a worship ceremony takes place. To do this, one must sit facing east or north near Holika and wrap a raw thread around it three or seven times. Then, offer pure water and other worship materials like a pot of water, garland, roli and flowers.

Other items like rice, fragrance, jaggery, whole turmeric, green gram, sweets, gulal and coconut are also offered. Additionally, portions of the new crop, such as ripe gram and wheat ears are included. It's believed that eating grains roasted in the Holika fire keeps an individual healthy.

After worship, Holika is burnt. Remember to do Holika Dahan after Bhadra and never before sunset. Additionally, Holika Dahan puja must never be performed on Chaturdashi Tithi or Pratipada. The next morning, bring the remaining fire and ashes into your house to remove negative energies.
