Indira Ekadashi 2025, observed on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the Bhadrapada month, is a significant day dedicated to Lord Vishnu and remembering ancestors. Falling this year on 17 September 2025, it is believed that fasting and offering prayers on this day help in removing ancestral sins and bring peace to departed souls. Devotees observe a strict fast, chant Vishnu mantras, and offer water and food to Brahmins or the needy.
In addition to performing certain rituals, the devotees must observe certain important dos and don’ts on this day to seek the blessings of ancestors and to avoid displeasing them. Below is the list of important rules that must be followed on Indira Ekadashi:
Indira Ekadashi 2025: Dos And Don'ts You Must Observe
- On Indira Ekadashi, it’s important to follow the fast sincerely. This means avoiding food and water or, depending on your ability, sticking to simple fruits and milk. The fast is a way to purify the mind and body, helping you focus on prayers for the peace and well-being of your ancestors.
- It’s customary to offer water, sesame seeds, and food to your ancestors, known as pind daan. This act shows gratitude and helps in cleansing any lingering negativity or karmic debts. You can also donate to priests, the poor, or offer food to animals.
- Chanting mantras like “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” or reading scriptures like the Vishnu Sahasranama helps invoke Lord Vishnu’s grace. It’s believed that his blessings will protect your family and lead to spiritual growth.

- On this day, it’s advised to avoid grains, beans, and other heavy meals as they are considered impure during the fast. Such foods may disturb the spiritual focus of the day. Instead, stick to lighter options like fruits, milk, and water.
- Indira Ekadashi is a day to foster peace, reflection, and compassion. Avoid getting involved in conflicts, harsh words, or negative thinking. Such actions are believed to create unrest not only within yourself but also for your ancestors.
- Charity is highly encouraged on this day. Offering clothes, grains, or money to the less fortunate is seen as a way to honour your ancestors and bring merit to your family.
