The Legend of Karva
Karva Chauth's origin is linked to the legend of Karva, a devoted wife. When a crocodile attacked her husband while bathing in the river, Karva sprang into action. Using a cotton yarn, she bound the crocodile and confronted Lord Yama, demanding its demise. Yama, intimidated by her bravery, sent the creature to hell and blessed Karva's husband with longevity. This tale exemplifies the unwavering dedication of a wife, epitomising the spirit of Karva Chauth.
The Legend of Satyavan and Savitri
The legendary tale of Satyavan and Savitri is deeply rooted in Karva Chauth. When Lord Yama arrived to claim Satyavan's soul, Savitri pleaded for her husband's life. Yama refused, but Savitri's unwavering devotion moved him. He granted her a wish, excluding her husband's life. Savitri cleverly wished for children, forcing Yama to revive Satyavan. Queen Veeravati's story underscores the significance of Karva Chauth. During her first fast, Veeravati's brothers deceived her with a fake moon, prompting her to break her fast prematurely. Consequently, her husband fell ill. Meeting Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Veeravati learned of her mistake. Parvati offered a second chance, and Veeravati faithfully reobserved the fast, reviving her husband. Karwa Chauth 2024: Rituals
The Karva Chauth fast commences at dawn, with women partaking in a pre-dawn meal called "sargi", traditionally prepared by their mother-in-law. Following this meal, they abstain from food and water throughout the day, awaiting the moon's ascent. The morning hours are often filled with communal activities, such as applying henna and socialising with fellow observers.
As evening falls, women gather for a collective prayer, seeking longevity and well-being for their husbands. The fast remains in place until the moon's appearance, at which point women view it through a sieve or strainer. Subsequently, they gaze at their husband through the same strainer, symbolising their devotion. The husband then breaks the fast by offering his wife water and sweets, marking the reunion.
Karva Chauth is predominantly celebrated in Northern and Central India, honouring the profound bond between spouses. Unmarried women also participate, fasting to find a loving and caring partner. For them, the fast concludes upon sighting the first star in the evening sky.
