Krishna Janmashtami 2025: Puja Vidhi For Abhishek (16 Charan)

Below is the 16 Charan Abhishekam Vidhi for Laddu Gopal Abhishek with mantras:

Meditation (Dhyana)

Begin by focusing on Lord Shri Krishna. Gaze upon the beautiful image or idol of Shri Krishna placed before you and prepare your mind with devotion.

Chant:

ॐ तमद्भुतं बालकम् अम्बुजेक्षणम्, चतुर्भुज शंख गदायुधायुदम्।
श्री वत्स लक्ष्मम् गल शोभि कौस्तुभं, पीतम्बरम् सान्द्र पयोद सौभगं।।
महार्ह वैदूर्य किरीटकुन्डल त्विशा परिष्वक्त सहस्रकुन्डलम्।
उद्धम कांचनगदा कङ्गणादिभिर् विरोचमानं वसुदेव ऐक्षत।।

Visualise Krishna as a marvellous child with lotus-like eyes, holding the conch and mace in His four hands, adorned with the Shrivatsa mark and the radiant Kaustubha gem. He wears a yellow garment, shining like a rain cloud, and His crown and earrings sparkle like precious gems.

Chant further:

ध्यायेत् चतुर्भुजं कृष्णं, शंख चक्र गदाधरम्।
पीतम्बरधरं देवं माला कौस्तुभभूषितम्।।
ॐ श्री कृष्णाय नमः। ध्यानात् ध्यानम् समर्पयामि।।

Offer this meditation to Lord Krishna with a bowed heart.

Invocation (Āvāhana)

After meditation, recite the following mantra, showing the Āvāhana Mudra (gesture of invitation) before the idol to invite Shri Krishna into your worship.

Chant:

ॐ सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषः सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्।
स भूमिं विश्वतो वृत्वा सुत्यतिष्ठद्दशाङ्गुलम्।।
आगच्छ देवदेवेश तेजोराशे जगत्पते।
क्रियमाणां मया पूजां गृहाण सुरसत्तमे।।
आवाहयामि देव त्वां वसुदेव कुलोद्भवम्।
प्रतिमायां सुवर्णादिनिर्मितायां यथाविधि।।
कृष्णम् च बलबनं च वसुदेवं च देवकीम्।
नन्दगोप यशोदाम् च सुभद्राम् तत्र पूजयेत्।।
आत्मा देवानां भुवनस्य गभों यथावशं चरति देवेषः।
घोषा इदस्य शण्विर न रूपं तस्मै वातायहविषा विधेम।।

Feel the divine presence of Shri Krishna, along with His family, descending into the idol.

Offering of the Seat (Āsana)

After inviting Him, offer a sacred seat made of flowers.

Chant:

पुरुष एवेदगं सर्वम् यद्भुतं यच्छ भव्यम्।
उतामृतत्वस्येशानः यदन्नेनातिरोहति।।
राजाधिराज राजेन्द्र बालकृष्ण महीपते।
रत्न सिंहासनं तुभ्यं दास्यामि स्वीकुरु प्रभो।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। आसनं समर्पयामि।।

Visualise placing a precious gem-studded throne for Him to sit upon.

Washing the Feet (Pādya)

Offer water to wash the feet of Lord Krishna.

Chant:

एतावानस्य महिमा अतो ज्यायागंश्च पूरुषः।
पादोऽस्य विश्वा भूतानि त्रिपादस्यामृतं दिवि।।
अच्युतानन्द गोविन्द प्रणतार्ति विनाशन।
पाहि मां पुन्डरीकाक्ष प्रसीद पुरुषोत्तम।।

Offering Arghya (Water for Head Ablution)

After washing the feet, offer arghya — sacred water for the Lord’s head.

Chant:

त्रिपादूर्ध्व उदैत्पुरुषः पादोऽस्येहाभवात्पुनः।
ततो विश्वङ्ग्यक्रामत् साशनानशने अभि।।
परिपूर्ण परानन्द नमो नमो कृष्णाय वेधसे।
गृहाणार्ध्वम् मया दत्तम् कृष्णा विष्णोर्जनार्दन।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। अर्घ्यम् समर्पयामि।।

Offering Ācamaniya (Water for Sipping)

Present water for the Lord to sip, symbolising purification before the sacred rituals.

Chant:

तस्माद्विराडजायत विराजो अधि पूरुषः।
स जातो अत्यरिच्यत पश्चाद्ध‌मिमथो पुरः।।
नमः सत्याय शुद्धाय नित्याय ज्ञान रूपिणे।
गृहाणाचमनं कृष्ण सर्व लोकैक नायक।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। आचमनीयं समर्पयामि।।

Sacred Bath (Snana)

Now bathe the Lord with pure, clean water or a mixture of holy waters, visualising Him shining in divine beauty.

Chant:

यत्पुरुषेण हविषा देवा यज्ञमतन्वत।
वसन्तो अस्यासीदाज्यम् ग्रीष्म इध्मश्शरद्धविः।।
ब्रह्माण्डोदर मध्यस्थैस्तिथैश्च रघुनन्दन।
स्नापयिश्याम्यहं भक्त्या त्वं गृहाण जनार्दना।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। मलापकर्श स्नानं समर्पयामि।।

Offering Garments (Vastra)

After the bath, lovingly offer new clothes to the Lord.

Chant:

ॐ तं यज्ञं बर्हिषि प्रौक्षन् पुरुषं जातमग्रतः।
तेन देवा अयजन्त साध्या ऋषयश्च ये।।
ॐ उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह।
प्रादुर्भुनोऽस्मि राष्ट्रस्मिन्कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मे।।
तप्त कान्चन संकाशं पीताम्बरम् इदं हरे।

Offering Sacred Thread (Yajnopavita)

Offer a new sacred thread (janeu) to Shri Krishna.

Chant:

तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः संभृतं पृषदाज्यम्।
पशुगॅस्तागंश्चक्रे वायव्यान् आरण्यान् ग्राम्याश्चये।।
क्षुत्पिपासामलां ज्येष्ठामलक्ष्मी नाशयाम्यहम्।
अभूतिमसमृद्धिं च सर्वां निर्णदमे गृहात्।।
श्री बालकृष्ण देवेश श्रीधरानन्त राघव।
ब्रह्मसुत्रम्चोत्तरीयं गृहाण यदुनन्दन।।

Offering Fragrance (Gandha)

Present sandal paste, saffron, camphor, and other fragrances to the Lord.

Chant:

तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः ऋचः सामानि जज्ञिरे।
छन्दांसि जज्ञिरे तस्मात् यजुस्तस्मादजायत।।
गन्धद्वारां दुराधर्षां नित्यपुष्टां करीषिणीम्।
ईश्वरीं सर्वभूतानां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम्।।
कुम्कुमागरु कस्तूरि कर्पूरं चन्दनं तता।
तुभ्यं दास्यामि राजेन्द्र श्री कृष्णा स्वीकुरु प्रभो।।

Offering Ornaments (Abharana)

Decorate the Lord with ornaments for His beauty and glory.

Chant:

गृहाण नानाभरणानि कृष्णाय निर्मितानि।
ललाट केठोत्तम कर्ण हस्त नितम्ब हस्तांगुलि भूषणानि।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। आभरणानि समर्पयामि।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। हस्तभूषणं समर्पयामि।।

Offering Multiple Fragrant Substances (Nana Parimala Dravya)

Present various perfumes and aromatic items.

Chant:

ॐ अहिरिव भोगैः पर्येति बाहुं जयाया हेतिं परिबाधमानः।
हस्तघ्नो विश्वा वयुनानि विद्वान्पुमान्पुमांसं परि पातु विश्वतः।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। नाना परिमल द्रव्यं समर्पयामि।।

Offering Flowers (Pushpa)

Now offer flowers and Tulsi garlands.

Chant:

माल्यादीनि सुगन्धीनि, माल्यतादीनि वैप्रभो।
मया हितानि पूजार्थम्, पुष्पाणि प्रतिगृह्यताम्।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। पुष्पाणि समर्पयामि।।

Aṅga Pūjā – Worship of the Divine Limbs of Lord Shri Krishna

While reciting the following mantras, one should worship the divine limbs of Lord Krishna.
Hold rice, flowers, and sandalwood paste in your left hand. With each mantra, release them gently near the corresponding part of Shri Krishna’s idol with your right hand.

ॐ श्री कृष्णाय नमः। पादी पूजयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Krishna. I worship His divine feet.

ॐ राजीवलोचनाय नमः। गुल्फौ पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the lotus-eyed Lord. I worship His ankles.

ॐ नरकान्तकाय नमः। जानुनी पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the slayer of Narakasura. I worship His knees.

ॐ वाचस्पतये नमः। जंघै पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the Lord of divine speech. I worship His calves.

ॐ विश्वरूपाय नमः। ऊरून् पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the One whose form encompasses the universe. I worship His thighs.

ॐ बलभद्रानुजाय नमः। गुहां पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the younger brother of Balarama. I worship His waist.

ॐ विश्वमूर्तये नमः। जघनं पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the universal form. I worship His hips.

ॐ गोपीजनप्रियाय नमः। कटिं पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the Beloved of the Gopis. I worship His midsection.

ॐ परमात्मने नमः। उदरं पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the Supreme Soul. I worship His stomach.

ॐ श्रीकण्टाय नमः। हृदयं पूजयामि।।
Salutations to the auspicious-throated One. I worship His heart.

Dhūpa – Offering of Incense

Take the incense stick in your right hand and light it. As the gentle fragrance rises, imagine it carrying your love and devotion to Lord Shri Krishna. While presenting it before Him, recite the following mantra:

वनस्पत्युद्भवो दिव्यो गन्धाढ्यो गन्धवुत्तमः ।
बालकृष्ण महिपालो धूपोयं प्रतिगृह्यताम् ।।

This incense, born of fragrant plants, divine and filled with the purest aroma, I offer to You, O Child Krishna, Lord of the Earth. May You graciously accept it.

यत्पुरुषं व्यदधुः कतिधा व्यकल्पयन् ।
मुखं किमस्य कौ बाहू कावूरू पादावुच्येते ।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। धूपं आघ्रापयामि।।

Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. May You be pleased to inhale this incense.

Dīpa – Offering of the Lamp

Place a ghee lamp (or oil lamp) in front of the Lord, ensuring it is lit with a steady, clean flame. Hold it up to His beautiful form, moving it gently in a circular motion as if offering the light of your own heart. Then set it down before Him and recite:

साज्यं त्रिवर्ति सम्युक्तं वह्निना योजितुम् मया।
गृहाण मङ्गलं दीपं, त्रैलोक्य तिमिरापहम्।।

This auspicious lamp, filled with ghee and fitted with three wicks, I have kindled with fire. O Lord, please accept this light which removes the darkness of all the three worlds.

भक्त्या दीपं प्रयश्चामि देवाय परमात्मने।
त्राहि मां नरकात् घोरात् दीपं ज्योतिर्नमोस्तुते।।

With devotion, I offer this lamp to the Supreme Lord. Protect me from terrible hells. Salutations to the divine radiance of the lamp.

ब्राह्मणोस्य मुखमासीत् बाहू राजन्यः कृतः।
उरू तदस्य यद्वैश्यः पद्भ्यां शूद्रो अजायत।।

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। दीपं दर्शयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I present this lamp for Your divine vision.

Naivedya – Offering of Food

Prepare sweet offerings such as makhan mishri (butter and sugar), dhaniya panjiri (spiced coriander sweet), fruits, or other delicacies. Place them with love before Lord Shri Krishna, imagining that you are personally feeding the Divine Child. Recite the following:

ॐ कृष्णाय विद्महे। बलभद्राय धीमहि।
तन्नो विष्णु प्रचोदयात्।।

We meditate upon Krishna, the brother of Balarama; may Vishnu inspire and guide us.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः।

Now, with your hands form the sacred gestures (mudrās) as per the tradition:

For removal of poison – Tārkṣa Mudrā

For immortality – Dhenu Mudrā

For purification – Śaṅkha Mudrā

For protection – Cakra Mudrā

For great prosperity – Meru Mudrā

Recite:
ॐ सत्यंतवर्तन परिषिंचामि।

Humbly invite the Lord:
O Master! Please come for the meal and accept this humble offering.

Describe the offering in your heart:
A golden plate, studded with precious gems, filled with pure cow’s ghee, lovingly cooked foods, rice, vegetables, yoghurt, milk, sweets, and drinks. I place before You delicacies to eat, to drink, and to relish. I offer betel leaves, flavoured with aromatic spices, as is done daily, O Krishna, as I meditate upon You in my heart.

Continue:
Whatever is freshly prepared today in this home—rice, water, side dishes—though meant for human nourishment, I dedicate entirely to Your worship, O Janardana. May You graciously accept this nourishing, sweet, and plentiful food and enjoy it as You please.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः।

Now offer the sanctifying mantras:
ॐ अमृतोपस्तरणमसि स्वाहा।
ॐ प्राणात्मने नारायणाय स्वाहा।
ॐ अपानात्मने वासुदेवाय स्वाहा।
ॐ व्यानात्मने सङ्कर्षणाय स्वाहा।
ॐ उदानात्मने प्रद्युम्नाय स्वाहा।
ॐ समानात्मने अनिरुद्धाय स्वाहा।

Offer the final prayer:
O Lord Bala Krishna, please accept this Naivedya. Make my devotion unwavering, grant me my heartfelt wishes, and lead me to the supreme path.

श्री कृष्ण नमस्तुभ्यम् महा नैवेद्यं उत्तमम्।
संगृहाण सुरश्रेष्ठिन् भक्ति मुक्ति प्रदायकम्।।

O Krishna! I bow to You. Accept this great and excellent Naivedya, O best among the gods, which grants both devotion and liberation.

Conclude with:
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि।।
सर्वत्र अमृतोपिधान्यमसि स्वाहा।।
ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। उत्तरापोषणं समर्पयामि।।

Mahā Nirajana – Offering of Aarti (Lamp Ritual)

Perform the aarti by circling a lit lamp in front of Shri Krishna, singing or reciting the following mantra:

ॐ श्रिये जातः श्रिय अनिरियाय श्रियं वयो जरितृभ्यो ददाति
श्रियं वसाना अमृतत्वमायन् भवंति सत्य स मिथामितद्रौ
श्रिय एवैनं तत् श्रियामादधाति संततमृचा वषट्कृत्यं
संतत्यै संघीयते प्रजया पशुभिः य एवं वेद।।

From the birth of prosperity arises continuous abundance, giving bliss and immortality. May this divine radiance always protect all beings.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। महानीराजनं दीपं समर्पयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I offer this grand Aarti lamp with devotion.

Pradakshina – Circumambulation with Flowers

Circumambulate the deity from left to right, keeping flowers in hand. As you walk, recite:

ॐ नाभ्या आसीदन्तरिक्षम् शीष्णों द्यौः समवर्तत।
पदभ्यां भूमिर्दिशः श्रोत्रात् तथा लोकां अकल्पयन्।।

From the navel extends the space, the sky above revolves. The earth, directions, and worlds are formed by Your presence.

आर्द्रां यःकरिणी यष्टिं पिङ्गलां पद्ममालिनीम्।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मी जातवेदो म आवह्।।

With folded hands, I offer this garland of flowers, invoking the golden moon-like form of Lakshmi, called by Jātavedas.

यानि कानि च पापानि जन्मांतर कृतानि च।
तानि तानि विनश्यन्ति प्रदक्षिणे पदे पदे।।

All sins committed in past lives are destroyed with every step in this circumambulation.

अन्यथा शरणं नास्ति त्वमेव शरणं मम।
तस्मात् कारुण्य भावेन रक्ष रक्ष रमापते।।

There is no refuge other than You, O Lord. Please protect me with Your boundless compassion.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। प्रदक्षिणान् समर्पयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I offer this circumambulation with flowers and devotion.

Tambula – Offering of Betel Leaves and Areca Nut

Present betel leaves, areca nut, and other traditional accompaniments to Lord Shri Krishna with love. As you place them before Him, recite the following mantra:

पूगीफलं सतांबूलं नागवल्लि दलैर्युतम्।
ताम्बूलं गृह्यतां कृष्ण येल लवंग सम्युक्तम्।।

O Krishna, please accept this sacred Tambula, consisting of betel leaves, areca nut, cloves, and other auspicious items.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। पूगीफल ताम्बूलं समर्पयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I offer this Tambula with devotion and love.

Dakshina – Offering of Donation

Offer a symbolic gift, often coins, flowers, or gold, as a token of respect and gratitude. While presenting it, recite:

हिरण्य गर्भ गर्भस्थ हेमबीज विभावसोः।
अनन्त पुण्य फलदा अधः शान्तिं प्रयच्छ मे।।

O Lord, grant peace and bless me with endless merits as I offer this Dakshina from my heart.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। सुवर्ण पुष्प दक्षिणां समर्पयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I humbly present this Dakshina with golden flowers.

Namaskara – Prostration and Salutation to Shri Krishna

Offer respectful salutations to Lord Shri Krishna, acknowledging His divinity, grace, and all-encompassing presence. While bowing or folding hands, recite:

नमो ब्रह्मण्य देवाय गोब्राह्मणहिताय च।
जगदीशाय कृष्णाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः।।

Salutations to the Supreme Divine, the protector of cows and Brahmins, the Lord of the universe, Shri Krishna, and Govinda.

कृष्णाय वासुदेवाय हरये परमात्मने।
प्रणतक्लेशनाशाय गोविन्दाय नमो नमः।।

I bow to Krishna, the son of Vasudeva, the supreme soul, the remover of suffering for those who surrender.

नमस्तुभ्यं जगन्नाथ देवकीतनय प्रभो

वसुदेवात्मजानन्द यशोदानन्दवर्धन
गोविन्द गोकुलादर गोपीकान्त नमोस्तुते।।

Salutations to You, O Lord Jagannath, the beloved son of Devaki, delight of Vasudeva, Yashoda, and the Gopis of Gokul.

सप्तास्यासन् परिधयः त्रिस्सप्त समिधः कृताः।
देवा यद्यज्ञं तन्वानाः अबवघ्नन्पुरुषं पशुम्।।

May all offerings and sacred fires be accepted, and may the deities, who oversee all sacrifices, bless me.

तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनीम्।
यस्यां हिरण्यं विन्देयं गामश्वं पुरुषानहम्।।

O Jātavedas, please bring forth Goddess Lakshmi, the source of prosperity, who grants wealth, cows, and all earthly blessings.

नमः सर्व हितार्थाय जगदाधार हेतवे।
साष्टाङ्गोयं प्रणामस्ते प्रयत्नेन मया कृतः।।

I bow to You with full devotion and eightfold prostration, seeking universal well-being and sustenance for all creation.

उरूसा शिरसा दृष्ट्वा मनसा वाचसा तथा।
पद्भ्यां कराभ्यां जानुभ्याम् प्रणामोष्टांगं उच्यते।।

With body, head, eyes, mind, speech, hands, knees, and feet, I offer complete prostration, surrendering entirely.

शात्येनापि नमस्कारान् कुर्वतः शार्ङ्गपाणये।
शत जन्मार्चितम् पापम् तत्क्षणदेव नश्यति।।

Even if one hundred lifetimes of worship have accumulated sins, they are instantly erased by sincere salutation.

ॐ श्री बालकृष्णाय नमः। नमस्कारान् समर्पयामि।।
Salutations to Shri Bala Krishna. I offer my respectful prostration with devotion.

Kshamapana – Seeking Forgiveness

At the end of the puja, humbly seek forgiveness from Shri Krishna for any known or unknown mistakes made during worship. Recite:

अपराध सहस्राणि क्रियन्ते अहर्निशं मया।
दासोऽयमिति मां मत्वा क्षमस्व पुरुषोत्तम।।

O Supreme Lord, I may have committed countless mistakes knowingly or unknowingly during this worship. Please forgive me, O Purushottam.

यान्तु देव गणाः सर्वे पूजां आदाय पार्थिवीम्।
इष्ट काम्यार्थ सिद्ध्यर्थं पुनरागमनाय च।।

May all divine beings accept this puja performed on Earth, fulfilling my wishes and granting me the opportunity to return and worship again.

May this offering be completely dedicated to Shri Krishna.
