Magh Purnima 2026: Significance

As per the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, Lord Vishnu resides in the waters of the Ganges River during Magh Purnima, and thus, a bath in the Ganges River on this day leads to salvation. From an astrological standpoint, on this day, the Sun is in Capricorn, and the Moon is in Cancer, and thus, a holy bath can counter the ill effects of the Sun and the Moon. From a scientific standpoint, this period is also extremely auspicious for making the body resistant to the changing weather conditions.

Magh Purnima 2026: Rituals

Taking a holy bath before sunrise on Magh Purnima is also of utmost importance. If you are unable to go to a river, you can take a bath at home by mixing Gangajal with your bathwater. After taking a bath, worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Parvati. Worshipping Lord Brihaspati and listening to the Satyanarayan Katha on this day is extremely auspicious.

The devotees keep a fast throughout the day and break it only after offering prayers to the moon in the evening. Only one sattvic meal is taken in a day. In the evening, a huge gathering of devotees takes place at Vishnu temples for special darshan of the deity.
