Nag Panchami 2024: Puja Vidhi For This Sacred Day

On Nag Panchami, people adorn their doorways with images of Nagas to repel evil spirits. Devotees offer sweet treats like milk and honey to snakes in the fields, showcasing reverence and respect. In South India, the celebration takes a unique turn, where married women visit their paternal homes after an early morning bath, highlighting the significance of sibling bonds. They worship anthills, believed to be snake habitats, and some even pay homage to live cobras or cobra idols. Milk is a prominent offering, with a portion brought back as a sacred prasad. This milk is then used to create a floral paste, which women apply to their brothers' backs, symbolising protection and affection. This distinctive celebration underscores the importance of family ties and the revered status of snakes in the region's culture.

On the auspicious occasion of Nag Panchami, devotees offer a diverse array of sacred items to Lord Shiva, seeking his blessings and benevolence. These offerings include an assortment of pure and natural substances, such as honey, milk, flowers, fruits, and sweets, which are considered pleasing to the deity. Additionally, Bilva leaves, which hold great significance in Hindu mythology, are also presented to Lord Shiva. This elaborate offering is a testament to the devotion and reverence of the faithful, who seek to appease the lord and invoke his protection and favour. By presenting these sacred items, devotees express their gratitude and humility, acknowledging Lord Shiva's supreme power and association with the serpent gods, who are worshipped on this special day.

Nag Panchami 2024: Fasting Rules Of This Day

1. Observe a strict fast: Devotees should observe a strict fast, abstaining from food and water, from sunrise to sunset.

2. Wake up early: Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes.

3. Worship snakes: Worship live snakes or idols/images of snakes, offering milk, honey, and flowers.

4. Offer prayers: Recite prayers and mantras, like the Nag Panchami Mantra, to invoke the blessings of the snake gods.

5. Charity: Donate to charities or offer food to Brahmins, if possible.

6. Avoid certain activities: Avoid activities like cutting nails, shaving, and using harsh chemicals.

7. Maintain purity: Maintain physical and mental purity throughout the day.

8. Break the fast: Break the fast after sunset, with a meal that includes dairy products and fruits.
