Narasimha Jayanti 2025: Significance

The Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu is deemed the most horrific of all his avatars. Upon killing the demon Hiranyaksha in his Varaha Avatar, Vishnu assumed the Narasimha Avatar as a half-man, half-lion, and killed Hiranyakashipu, Hiranyaksha's brother and Prahlad's tyrannical father. In order to take revenge on his brother, Hiranyakashipu did rigorous penance and got a boon from Brahma. Although Brahma was unable to give immortality, he permitted Hiranyakashipu to impose conditions on his death, thinking these would render him invincible.

Hiranyakashipu's authority gave him an arrogant nature, and he insisted that his son Prahlad worship him rather than Vishnu. When Prahlad did not obey, Hiranyakashipu attempted to kill him repeatedly. In one such attempt, Holika, Hiranyakashipu's sister, sat in flames with Prahlad, attempting to kill him with her fire-proof boon. But she died instead, and Prahlad was unharmed. Fuming, Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlad's devotion to Vishnu. When he inquired if Vishnu was inside a pillar, Lord Narasimha came out of it at sunset, ripped Hiranyakashipu to shreds with his claws, and slew him without breaking the boon.

Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the victory of dharma over adharma. Devotees keep a fast and sincerely pray on this day for safety and wish-granting. It is believed that Lord Narasimha grants devotees peace and protects them from evil forces.
