Nirjala Ekadashi holds great significance in Hinduism since it is devoted to the worship of Lord Vishnu. The word "Nirjala," also known as "Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi," means "without water." As a result, no food or drink is consumed on this Ekadashi. On this day, devotees who fast refrain from eating and drinking. It is believed that Nirjala Ekadashi atones for all misdeeds. On this day, it is believed that worshipping Lord Vishnu and keeping a fast erases all sins and grants all desires. Another name for this Ekadashi is Bhimsen Ekadashi. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi is being observed on 18th June 2024.
However, there are certain dos and don’ts that must be observed on this day in order to keep misfortune at bay.
Nirjala Ekadashi 2024: Do’s And Don’ts To Follow On Bhimseni Ekadashi
- Nirjala literally translates to "fasting without water." Furthermore, this fasting is strict and literal - that is, one cannot eat or drink anything. However, some believers choose a diet high in fruits and milk while avoiding certain grains.
- It isn't considered auspicious to pluck basil leaves on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi, hence one should avoid doing so with tulsi leaves.
- One should avoid bathing with body wash or soap on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi. They must only use regular water. Devotees must also refrain from washing their hair on Ekadashi vrat.
- Whether you are fasting or not, devotees are not allowed to eat any rice-based foods on the day of Ekadashi. It's believed that they won't enjoy the benefits of the day.

- On this auspicious day of Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees are required to offer Bhog to Lord Vishnu along with Tulsi Dal. For this, they can pluck and preserve the Tulsi leaves a day before Ekadashi fasting.
- Meat and alcohol consumption are discouraged on this day for non-observers of the fast. On this day, one must only consume sattvic cuisine.
- On the day of Ekadashi vrat, devotees should recite Lord Vishnu's mantras and read Shrimad Bhagavatam or Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.
- During fasting, devotees must not sleep and are not allowed to mistreat or say false words.
