Pradosh Vrat April 2025: Vrat Katha

According to Hindu legends, the gods and demons came together to churn the ocean to extract the elixir of life - Amrit. King Vasuki, the serpent king assisted them in this endeavour. However, as a result of the churning, Vasuki's body was scratched, causing him to emit a potent poison. Frightened by this incident, the gods and demons sought the help of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva selflessly swallowed the poison to save the world from its destructive power.

As the poison took effect, Goddess Parvati intervened, choking Lord Shiva's throat to prevent the poison from spreading to the rest of his body. This turned his throat blue, earning him the name Neelkantha. Philosophically, it is believed that on the 13th lunar day or Trayodashi, the gods and demons realised their mistake in not worshipping Lord Shiva for this selfless act. They sought his forgiveness, which he graciously granted. Lord Shiva then danced between the horns of Nandi - his celestial bull. This sacred moment is known as Pradosham, a time considered auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that worshipping Bholenath during this sacred period of Pradosh Kaal can fulfil their deepest desires and wishes.
