Puthandu 2025: The Tamil New Year, also known as Tamil Varusha Pirappu marks the onset of the Chithirai month in the Tamil solar calendar. This significant day is observed by different names across various Indian regions. In Punjab, Puthandu is known as Baisakhi, in West Bengal it is known as Pohela Boishakh and in Kerala it is celebrated as Vishu. Unique traditions and customs are associated with the festivities in each region. This year, Puthandu is set to be celebrated on 14th April 2025.

Puthandu 2025: Significance
According to legend, Lord Indra visited Earth on the day of Puthandu to bring contentment and harmony. It is also believed that Lord Brahma created the Universe on the day of Puthandu. Tamil community offers prayers to the almighty on this sacred day for good health, fortune and happiness.
On this significant day, people across various Indian states including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and West Bengal also celebrate their New Year. The celebrations of Puthandu showcase the rich cultural diversity and traditions associated with different Indian regions, highlighting the significance of this day in the Hindu calendar.

Puthandu 2025: Rituals
The rituals for Puthandu or Tamil New Year begin with the preparation of a special thali known as Kanni which includes flowers, fruits, silver or gold jewellery, money, areca nut, betel leaves, and a mirror. This sacred ritual is believed to bring prosperity and happiness throughout the year. Tamil people decorate their homes with kolams and light a lamp at the centre of the kolam designs. Individuals wear new clothes, exchange warm greetings and enjoy a festive feast with family and friends to commemorate the new year. The feasts consists of Pacchadi - a dish made from grated raw mango, jaggery, salt, red chillies, neem leaves, turmeric and oil. This traditional meal is considered as an integral part of the celebrations.
On Putandu, elders gift children with money or presents. Special prayers and ceremonies take place in temples where the Panchangam for the Tamil New Year is read aloud. Devotees offer food to Brahmins and perform Tharpanam to worship their ancestors and seek their blessings for the upcoming year. Vibrant events such as the car festival of Tiruvidaimarudur and the Chitterai Porutkaatchi of Madurai are also organised that highlight the rich heritage and traditions of the Tamil community.
