Rang Panchami 2025: Significance

Rang Panchami is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated five days after Holi. The name reflects its colourful significance, with 'Rang' meaning 'colour' and 'Panchami' referring to the fifth day. This festival extends Holi celebrations in some areas, symbolising victory over spiritual barriers. It's celebrated with great enthusiasm in states like Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa and parts of North India.

Different regions celebrate Rang Panchami uniquely. For instance, Maharashtra knows it as 'Shimgo' or 'Shimga', featuring traditional Palkhi dance. In Goa, Hindus celebrate Shigmo and then Rang Panchami, smearing gulal and playing with water. This festival holds immense religious significance, believed to purify the atmosphere, invoke positivity and restore balance in life by activating the five elements - earth, light, water, sky and wind.

Rang Panchami 2025: Rituals

Rang Panchami celebrations vary across India. In Madhya Pradesh, people gather to witness water cannons and tanks splashing colour and water on everyone. In Indore, Rajwada is a popular spot for getting colored by canons. Bhang is also an integral part of the festivities.

In different states, Rang Panchami is known by various names. In Maharashtra, it's called Phalgun Poornima and Rang Panchami, while in Goa, it's known as Shimgo or Shimga. In Gujarat and Maharashtra, Matki-phod Holi is also celebrated, centered around Lord Krishna.

In southern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Holi is celebrated as Kama Dahanam, commemorating the burning of the cupid god by Lord Shiva. In eastern states like West Bengal and Odisha, Holi is known as Basant Utsav or Dol Poornima, featuring swing festivals and worship of Lord Krishna and Radha.

The traditional Palkhi dance is an enchanting part of Rang Panchami celebrations, especially among fishing communities. The festival is a celebration of love, colour and community bonding with people coming together to forget their differences and revel in the joy of the occasion.
