Ratha Saptami 2025: Significance

Hindus celebrate Ratha Saptami to commemorate the birth anniversary of Surya Bhagwan, the Sun God. According to legend, the Sun God illuminated the world on this day with his brilliance. To mark this occasion, temples dedicated to the Sun God across the country, particularly the famous Tirumala Tirupati Balaji Temple, host special events and programmes.

Ratha Saptami also symbolises the Sun God's journey towards the Northern Hemisphere, heralding the arrival of summer in southern India and the beginning of the harvest season. Devotees worship the Sun God on this day to seek robust health, longevity and spiritual cleansing. It is believed that worshipping the deity on Ratha Saptami frees individuals from past and present sins, offering a fresh start.

Ratha Saptami 2025: Rituals

On Ratha Saptami, devotees rise before sunrise to perform sacred rituals during the Arunodaya time. Taking a sacred bath at this time is believed to cure all ailments, earning the day the nickname Arogya Saptami. After bathing, devotees offer Arghyadan to the Sun god as the sun rises. They then light a ghee deepak and worship the Sun god with great devotion.

Devotees also create colourful rangolis in their front yards to honour the Sun god. A traditional ritual involves boiling milk in a mud vessel facing the sun, which is later used to prepare a special offering called Paramannam bhoj. Chanting the Gayatri Mantra and reciting sacred texts like Surya Sahasranaam and Adityahridayam are also considered auspicious on this day.
