The Mandala-Makaravilakku Mahotsavam is a sacred festival held at Sabarimala Temple, Kerala. This 41-day celebration honours Lord Ayyappa, embodying spiritual growth, self-discipline, and devotion. The festival commences with the temple's opening (Nadathurappu) and concludes with the Makaravilakku flame lighting on January 14th. During this period, devotees undertake a rigorous vow, adhering to austerity, meditation, and prayer. Sabrimala Nada Thurappu 2024: Mandala-Makaravilakku Mahotsavam Rituals
The Mandala-Makaravilakku Mahotsavam rituals commence with the temple's opening (Nada Thurappu), followed by the 41-day Mandala Puja. Daily rituals include Abhishekam (holy bath), Alankaram (decoration), and Deeparadhana (lamp worship). Devotees offer prayers, chant mantras, and sing bhajans. The sacred Irumudikettu (bag) containing coconut, rice, and other offerings is carried by pilgrims. Special pujas, such as Kalabhabhishekam and Padipooja, are performed. The temple's sanctum sanctorum is open throughout the festival, allowing devotees to offer prayers and darshan.
On Makaravilakku day, the sacred flame is lit at sunset, symbolising Lord Ayyappa's divine presence. Devotees witness the flame, chanting "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa." The festival concludes with the Guruthi ceremony, where devotees offer oblations to the deity. The temple doors close after the festival, reopening for the next Mandala-Makaravilakku Mahotsavam.
