Observed on the fourth day of the waning moon phase in the month of Ashwin, Vignaraja Sankashti Chaturthi holds immense significance. Devotees worship Ganesha, seeking his blessings for success, prosperity, and protection from evil forces. The day is believed to grant wisdom, good fortune, and spiritual growth. Fasting, chanting, and offering modaks (sweet dumplings) to Ganesha are integral to the festivities. By observing Vighnaraja Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees seek Lord Ganesha's guidance, strength, and blessings to overcome life's challenges, remove obstacles, and attain Moksha (liberation). This auspicious day rejuvenates faith, hope, and positivity among devotees.
Sankashti Chaturthi 2024: Vighnaraja Sankashti Chaturthi Rituals
On Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. The puja begins with cleansing the idol or image of Lord Ganesha. Devotees offer prayers, flowers, and naivedya (prasad) consisting of modakas (sweet dumplings), fruits, and vegetables. A special naivedya, 'Atukulu' (steamed rice cakes), is also offered. The Ganesha mantras and Sankashti Chaturthi Katha are recited. A deep (lamp) is lit, and aarti is performed. Devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it after moonrise.
After moonrise, devotees offer arghya (water) to the moon, marking the end of the fast. The moon is worshipped as a symbol of Lord Ganesha's divine presence. Devotees recite the Sankashti Chaturthi mantra: "Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha." The fast is broken with a meal, often including modakas and other sweet dishes. The puja concludes with prayers seeking Lord Ganesha's blessings for success, prosperity, and obstacle-free life.
