Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: Mahalaya or Sarv Pitru Amavasya is a significant Hindu observance that is dedicated to commemorating all ancestors, especially those whose date of death is unknown or lost. It is also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, Pitru Paksha Amavasya or Pitru Moksha Amavasya. In Bengal, Mahalaya marks the onset of Durga Puja festivities. Observed on the day of the new moon of Bhadrapada month in South India and Ashwin month in North India, it is an important day for offering Shradh ceremonies and prayers to obtain blessings and liberation for the departed souls. Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: Significance
It is believed that observing Sarva Pitru Amavasya with proper rituals brings good fortune and blessings to families. According to Hinduism, if these ceremonies are not performed, ancestors may come back unhappy, which could affect the lives of their descendants. Lord Yama is believed to give blessings to those who perform the rituals of Sarv Pitru Amavasya, which protects family members from different problems.

According to astrological beliefs, Shradh rituals can fix Pitra Dosha, which is a karmic imbalance passed down from ancestors. It frees the souls of ancestors and helps them find salvation. By doing these rites, people can look for peace, good fortune and spiritual growth for themselves and their families and honour their heritage.
Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2025: Rituals
To perform the rituals of Sarv Pitru Amavasya, one has to wake up early in the morning, take a sacred bath, and dress in traditional and clean clothes and wear a ring of Kusha grass. If possible, an expert priest must conduct the Pind Daan and Shradh rituals. Pure vegetarian sattvic food, like kheer is cooked as an offering to the forefathers. Brahmins are invited for prayer and served with devotion, while sesame seeds are scattered over the place where they sit. Prayers, flowers, diya, dhoop and the barley-water mixture are also offered to ancestors.

Performing Sarva Pitru Amavasya is believed to remove Pitru Dosha, a karmic imbalance one gets from ancestors, and offers blessings of prosperity, good health and wealth to the living. Crow and cow feeding is believed to be a favourable act since crows are considered messengers of Lord Yama. Shradh is normally performed by the eldest son or male relative, and Sattvic food alone is permissible during this time.
