Mahalaya Amavasya 2025 Date: In Hinduism, Mahalaya Amavasya also called Pitru Paksha Amavasya or Sarv Pitru Amavasya is a significant day, particularly for Bengalis who celebrate it with great reverence. This auspicious day is the end of a two-week period that is devoted to honouring deceased ancestors. It is a time to offer prayers for peace to appease the spirits of ancestors, and the rituals performed on this day are believed to grant their desires. Devotees worship their deceased souls on this day in an effort to ensure their salvation. This year, Mahalaya Amavasya is set to take place on 21st September 2025.

Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Significance
On Mahalaya Amavasya, the ancestors are believed to visit the homes of their descendants, and special rites are conducted to pay homage to them. Shradh ceremony, where oblations of water are offered and prescribed rituals are conducted is a mandatory component of these rituals.
Throughout this fortnight, the offerings are believed to go straight to the departed souls with the grace of Lord Yama. Bengali Hindus make preparations with customary decorations and family gatherings, filling the air with spiritual connections and harmony as this day also marks the preparations for Durga Puja festivities.

In Bengal, Mahalaya Amavasya also marks the advent of Goddess Durga on the Earth for the Durga Puja festivities.
Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Rituals
Families honour their departed loved ones on Mahalaya Amavasya by performing tarpan and shradh rituals. Participating in the shradh ceremony, wearing yellow and welcoming a Brahmin into the house are all part of the ritual. A sacred thread is worn on the right shoulder, and the Brahmin is treated with dignity. To please the ancestors, offerings of dhoop, diya, flowers, water and grain are made. Additionally, the Brahmins receive specially prepared food and a donation.
Family members recite mantras in order to seek the blessings of their ancestors on this special day. They ask for forgiveness for any past mistakes and thank their ancestors. The ceremony serves as a means of honouring the deceased and establishing a connection with the forefathers.
