Sawan 2025: The sacred month of Sawan is dear to Lord Shiva, who is pleased when devotees offer water to the Shivling. This act is believed to bring auspicious outcomes and swift blessings. Specific days like Sawan Somwar, Shivratri and Pradosh Vrat are considered particularly fruitful for Jalabhishek (water offering). While Lord Shiva is pleased with sincere devotion, following certain rules enhances the efficacy of the worship. It is believed that adhering to these guidelines ensures a more fulfilling experience. With a pure heart and proper rituals, one can seek Shiva's blessings and divine grace.

Astropatri shares essential guidelines and the best time to offer Jal on Shivling, especially during the month of Sawan to reap spiritual merits and amplify the benefits of Shiv Puja below:

Sawan 2025: What Is The Correct Way To Offer Jal On Shivling?

Below are pointers that explain the correct way to offer Jal on Shivling:

- Begin with Purity and Resolve: Rise early, during the Brahma Muhurtha and take a bath to purify yourself. Wear clean clothes and focus your mind on Lord Shiva with devotion.

- Prepare the Offerings: Fill a vessel with pure water, such as Gangajal and add a few grains of rice, sandalwood and flowers.

- Offer Water with Devotion: Go to a Lord Shiva temple featuring a Shivlingam. Stand facing east or north-east where the Shivling is positioned. Hold a copper, brass, or silver vessel and pour water in the following sequence:

  • Start by offering water on the right side of the Shivling, which represents Lord Ganesha.
  • Then, pour water on the left side, which represents Lord Kartikeya.
  • Next, offer water in the centre, which is believed to be the abode of Ashokasundari.
  • After that, pour water on the circular part, symbolising Goddess Parvati's hands.
  • Finally, offer water on the Shivling itself, representing Lord Shiva.

- Chant with Sincerity: As you pour water, recite the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya" with a pure heart and focused mind. This chanting helps maintain mental concentration and invokes Shiva's blessings.

Sawan 2025: What Is The Right Time For Jalabhishek?

- Brahma Muhurat: The most auspicious time for offering water to the Shivling is during Brahma Muhurtha, which occurs about 1.5 to 2 hours before sunrise. This period is considered sacred for self-purification, meditation and spiritual practices.

- Early Morning (4-6 AM): If Brahma Muhurtha isn't feasible, the early morning hours between 4-6 am are ideal for Jalabhishek. This time is believed to bring harmony to the body, mind and environment.

- Late Morning (7-11 AM): For those who can't rise early, the period between 7-11 am is also considered suitable for Shiv Puja and Jalabhishek. When performed with devotion and sincerity, this worship is pleasing to Lord Shiva.

Sawan 2025: When Should One Not Offer Jal On Shivling?

It's recommended to avoid offering water to the Shivling at night, especially without chanting mantras or lighting a lamp. While midday isn't typically considered ideal for Shiv Puja and Jalabhishek, special occasions like festivals or vrat (fasts) may make it auspicious.
