Sawan 2025 Start Date: Shravan or Sawan is a deeply spiritual month in the Hindu calendar, usually falling between July and August. Rich in cultural and religious significance, it is especially sacred to devotees of Lord Shiva. According to ancient legends, during the churning of the cosmic ocean or Samudra Manthan, a deadly poison called Halahal emerged. To save the universe, Lord Shiva bravely consumed the poison, and Goddess Parvati stopped it in his throat, turning it blue. This gave him the name Neelkantha, or “the blue-throated one.” Since then, Sawan has been devoted to honouring Shiva’s strength and sacrifice. Worship during this month is believed to bring divine protection, blessings, and the fulfilment of heartfelt desires.

This year, the Sawan month begins on 11th July 2025, Friday and ends on 9th August 2025, Saturday.

Sawan 2025: Significance Of Shravan Maas

Shravan, the fifth month in the Hindu calendar following Ashadha, is considered one of the holiest periods of the year by devout Hindus. Every single day of this sacred month is believed to be auspicious, especially for devotees of Lord Shiva. It is said that sincere worship during this period invites the blessings of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The word “Shiva” itself means Kalyan or welfare, and he is revered as the main deity among the Panchadev (Five Supreme Gods). In the Shiv Mahima Stotra, sage Pushpadant praises Lord Shiva as the eternal source behind creation, preservation and destruction, emphasising his role in every being’s existence.

According to legend, Shravan also marks the time when Goddess Parvati, born as the daughter of the Himalaya King, performed deep penance to win Lord Shiva’s heart. Her devotion touched the Lord, and he accepted her as his consort during this holy month. For this reason, Shravan holds special emotional and spiritual significance, symbolising divine love and reunion.

Sawan 2025: Rituals Of Shravan Maas

During the holy month of Sawan, devotees take part in several heartfelt rituals, with the Kanwar Yatra being one of the most significant. In this sacred pilgrimage, devotees collect water from holy rivers, especially the Ganges in pot palanquins called kanwars. They then walk long distances, often barefoot, to Shiva temples, where they pour the water over Shiva lingams. This act is symbolic of offering cool relief to Lord Shiva’s throat after he consumed poison during the cosmic churning.

Another deeply followed tradition is the Sawan Somvar Vrat – fasts observed on Mondays. Devotees eat only sattvic (pure vegetarian) food or completely abstain from eating, offering prayers and chanting mantras to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings. Mondays during Sawan are believed to be especially powerful for spiritual growth and the fulfilment of wishes.

Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva come alive with celebrations during this month. They’re decorated with fresh flowers and lights, special pujas are performed, and devotees gather to sing bhajans and listen to spiritual discourses. Many also wear blue, a colour associated with Lord Shiva, and make offerings of milk, water and Bilva leaves.
