Sawan Shivratri 2025: Significance
The significance of Sawan Shivratri is highly profound. It is believed that Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati on this sacred day. Devotees worship Shiva with great devotion, offering milk, bael leaves, water, and flowers to the Shivling, believing that these acts purify the soul and attract divine blessings. Observing a fast on Sawan Shivratri is said to help in overcoming negative karma, attaining inner peace and fulfilling heartfelt desires. The vrat is especially auspicious for those seeking marital bliss and spiritual growth. Shiva temples across India witness grand celebrations, particularly in places like Varanasi and Ujjain. Kawadiyas who carry sacred Ganga water across long distances, offer it to Lord Shiva on this day as an act of devotion and penance, symbolising complete surrender to divine will.

Sawan Shivratri 2025: Rituals
The puja on Sawan Shivratri begins early in the morning with a ritual bath and wearing clean, preferably white or saffron clothes. Devotees clean the puja space and install a Shivling, either at home or in temples. The worship starts with offering water, milk or Gangajal to Lord Shiva, followed by smearing the Shivling with honey, curd, and ghee. Bael leaves, dhatura flowers, white sandalwood, and rice are then offered. These elements are considered sacred and symbolic in invoking Lord Shiva's blessings.
Chanting mantras such as "Om Namah Shivaya" and reciting Shiva Chalisa or Rudrashtakam is a key part of the puja. Many devotees also read the Shiv Mahimna Stotra and perform Rudrabhishek with great devotion. Lighting an oil lamp and incense sticks adds to the serene atmosphere. The entire ritual is performed with a calm mind and heartfelt intentions. It is believed that sincere prayers on this night bring mental peace, clarity, and divine protection from adversities.
