Sawan Somwar 2025: Rituals

Sawan Somwar, observed every Monday during the holy month of Sawan (Shravan), holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. Devotees observe fasts and offer special prayers, believing that Lord Shiva is most benevolent during this time. Mondays are especially considered auspicious for worshipping him, and many seek his blessings for health, peace, and the fulfilment of heartfelt desires.

The day begins with devotees waking up early and taking a ritual bath, often in rivers or sacred water bodies, symbolising spiritual cleansing. They then visit Shiva temples to perform ‘Abhishekam’ , the ceremonial bathing of the Shivling with water, milk, honey, curd and ghee, known as Panchamrit. Along with this, offerings of bilva leaves, white flowers, fruits and incense are made. These rituals are performed with devotion, chanting of mantras like the ‘Maha Mrityunjaya’ and ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, creating a serene and powerful spiritual atmosphere.

Fasting is a key aspect of Sawan Somwar. Some devotees observe a ‘nirjala’ fast, refraining from both food and water, while others may consume fruits and milk. The fast is broken after evening prayers, and some people read or listen to the “Shiva Purana” or “Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha”, a traditional story associated with the significance of the fast. Women, in particular, pray for the well-being of their husbands or for an ideal life partner.
