Shakambhari Purnima 2025: Significance

Goddess Shakambhari embodies kindness, compassion and affection. Her name, derived from 'Shaka' (vegetables, herbs, and fruits) and 'Ambhari' (bringing), reflects her nurturing nature. As a mother to all living beings, Shakambhari Devi protects her devotees, especially those travelling through forests. On her day, devotees worship, fast and engage in charitable acts.

Shakambhari Devi's majestic form features a blue complexion, innumerable eyes, and a jewelled crown representing the Mahavidyas. Her three eyes symbolise wisdom, while her hands hold symbols of life, defence and protection. Her lower hands offer fruits, vegetables and herbs, solidifying her role as the deity of vegetation. Her numerous eyes convey her deep sympathy for all living beings.

Shakambhari Purnima 2025: Rituals

During Shakambhari Navratri, devotees observe a fast for seven to nine days, breaking it only after completing the final day's puja on Shakambhari Purnima. Alternatively, those unable to fast for the entire duration observe a fast on the first and last days of the festival.

To observe the fast, devotees start by waking up early, bathing, and cleaning the worship area. They offer gangajal to the deity and decorate the area with prasadam, fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Devotees then chant the Banashankari Pratah Smaran Mantra, setting a sacred tone for the day.

Devotees visit the Shakambhari temple, offering prasadam to the Devi and distributing sacred food to others after performing aarti. They also listen to the Shakambhari Katha, immersing themselves in the story and significance of the festival.
