Among all the full moon days in the Hindu calendar, Sharad Purnima is considered the most celebrated and spiritually powerful. This sacred night is believed to be when the moon radiates with all sixteen Kala, each symbolising a unique human quality. In Hindu tradition, Lord Krishna is regarded as the only divine being born with all sixteen Kala, which is why devotees offer prayers to Chandra Dev with great devotion. Astrologically, the moon is thought to be closest to Earth on this day, and its rays are believed to carry nourishing, healing elements. Many people spend the evening under the moonlight, drawing strength from its curative powers, while in some regions, tradition advises viewing the moon’s reflection in milk rather than looking directly at it.

For this reason, the festival is also known as Raas Purnima, a night that symbolises eternal love and divine union. Couples see it as a night to express their affection under the moonlight, drawing inspiration from Krishna’s divine dance of love. It is said that the first Maha Raas, a grand spiritual dance of cosmic joy, was performed on this very night, making Sharad Purnima a festival that beautifully blends devotion, romance, and spiritual significance.
Sharad Purnima 2025: Rituals
On Sharad Purnima, women, especially newlyweds, observe fasts with deep devotion, as it is believed to bring happiness, good health, and prosperity into their lives. Many also begin the sacred ‘Purnimasi Fasting’ on this day, marking it as the most auspicious start. The festival is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, and devotees offer prayers to seek her blessings for wealth, abundance, and harmony in their homes. Lord Krishna and Chandra Dev are also worshipped with reverence.
Devotees remain awake throughout the night, as it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi descends to Earth on Sharad Purnima, blessing all those she finds awake with prosperity and good fortune. This night of spiritual significance is therefore filled with prayers, bhajans, and devotion. People believe that staying alert and immersed in worship helps attract divine blessings, making the night a moment of grace and spiritual fulfilment.
In many regions, traditional delicacies such as poha, kheer, puffed rice, and sweets are lovingly prepared and placed under the open sky to soak in the moonlight. Later, these offerings are consumed, as it is believed that moon rays on Sharad Purnima carry healing and nourishing qualities. Temples, especially in Vrindavan, come alive with special religious ceremonies, drawing countless devotees who gather to celebrate the divine energy of this sacred full moon night.
