Shattila Ekadashi 2025: Rituals

On Shat Tila Ekadashi, devotees begin the day by bathing in water mixed with sesame seeds, believed to purify the body and soul. They also consume sesame seeds, known as 'til', as an act of devotion. Throughout the day, devotees focus on spiritual thoughts, refraining from negative emotions like greed, lust and anger.

Devotees observe a strict fast on Shat Tila Ekadashi, abstaining from food and drink. However, partial fasting is also permitted for those unable to fast completely. The emphasis is on devotion to Lord Vishnu, rather than strict adherence to fasting rules. Certain foods like grains, rice, and pulses are avoided on this day. The statue of Lord Vishnu is bathed in Panchamrit, a mixture that includes sesame seeds, and various offerings are made to please the Lord.

The night of Shat Tila Ekadashi is spent in devotion, with devotees staying awake and chanting Lord Vishnu's name with perseverance. In some places, yagnas (fire rituals) are organised, featuring sesame seed preparations as a key ingredient. These rituals and practices are believed to bring devotees closer to Lord Vishnu and grant them spiritual enlightenment.

Shattila Ekadashi 2025: Vrat Katha

A wealthy lady, renowned for her charitable donations, overlooked the importance of giving food to the poor. Lord Krishna, disguised as a beggar, approached her, seeking food. However, she refused and insulted him, placing a clay ball in his bowl instead.

As a consequence, all the food in her home transformed into clay, and her health began to deteriorate. Lord Krishna appeared in her dreams, reminding her of her mistake and advising her to donate food to the needy on Shattila Ekadashi. He also guided her to observe a strict fast on this day with devotion.

Following Lord Krishna's counsel, the lady donated generously and fasted on Shattila Ekadashi. As a result, she regained her wealth, health, and happiness. This legend highlights the significance of donating food to those in need and the importance of observing Shattila Ekadashi with devotion.
