Sindhara Dooj 2025: Rituals
On Sindhara Dooj, women dress in their traditional clothes and elegant jewellery, usually purchasing new bangles to add a finishing touch to their ensembles. Women give each other gifts and also put mehndi on their feet and hands, getting into the celebratory mood. This colourful celebration is proof of the happiness and elegance of women's customs.
The climax of the festival is the swings suspended from trees, which women convene at night to sing and dance to traditional songs. Swaying to and fro, they enjoy the warmth of loved ones and the rhythmic music. The happy tradition unites the community, and they celebrate and feel a sense of belonging together.
One of the very important aspects of Sindhara Dooj is the gift-giving ceremony, in which mothers-in-law bestow gifts on their daughters-in-law. The daughters-in-law go to their parental house, with gifts and sweets, and come back with a 'baya' - an emblem of love and blessings. This act consolidates the bonds of family and represents love and regard.
