Skanda Panchami is a sacred day dedicated to Lord Muruga, also known as Kartik, Kartikeya or Subramanya, who is deeply revered in southern India and by devotees across the world. He is the divine son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is celebrated as the god of war, wisdom and protection. On this day, devotees honour his courage, youthful energy and spiritual strength by offering prayers, lighting lamps, and visiting temples. The festival carries a strong sense of devotion, especially among those seeking inner strength, victory over obstacles and divine guidance.

In some parts of India and Nepal, the day after Skanda Panchami is observed as Kumar Shasti, a celebration that holds the belief that Lord Muruga manifested on this particular day. Families and devotees mark the occasion with deep reverence, offering special rituals and chanting hymns. The significance lies in the spiritual upliftment it brings and the powerful blessings devotees believe they receive from Lord Muruga.

Skanda Panchami 2025: Rituals

The rituals of Skanda Panchami begin early in the morning with devotees taking a holy bath and preparing a clean space for prayer. Homes and temples are decorated with flowers, lamps, and incense, creating a peaceful and divine atmosphere. Many people set up an image or idol of Lord Muruga, often accompanied by peacock motifs, as the peacock is his divine vehicle. Special prayers and chants like the Skanda Shashti Kavacham or Subramanya Bhujangam are recited to invoke Lord Muruga’s blessings.

Devotees offer fresh fruits, sweets, flowers, and milk as part of their devotion.
